The storm breaks
The first heavy drops finally fall, lashing against the roof as you retreat inside to wait out the gale.
Kevin heads to the dock to test the Yanmar engine on the dinghy, checking for bearing wear under load. Jenny stays at the cottage to inspect the water tank and begins sketching sea beets as the air pressure continues to drop.
Kevin — sit by the wood stove, feeding it dry spruce to keep the chill out, and listen to the storm. Keep one hand on the shortwave radio in case it crackles to life with Tom’s voice—or the supply boat calling early. Wait. Watch the barometer.

The rain is coming in hard, Kevin.
Put the kettle on the stove and watch the needle on the barometer.

Yeah. Tank’ll fill fast. Hope the overflow’s clear.
Stand, move to the rain tank, and check the overflow pipe for blockages—clear any debris with my gloved hand so it doesn’t back up and flood the cottage foundation.

Check the mesh at the end too, the leaves are getting thick.
Pull out my notebook and sketch the way the rain is hitting the stone walls.
