← Day 26

the keeper's cottage · day 26 · dawn

Rising humidity and morning tasks

The air inside the cottage is heavy as the grey sky thickens over the island. Kevin prepares the sail canvas for the final reef points while Jenny gathers her sketching materials and the crowbar for the waterlogged crate.

Kevin pried open the water-logged crate on the dock, revealing intact tins and a new coil of rope. Jenny successfully inspected the heirloom seeds in the tin, confirming the damp packets are still viable despite the high humidity.

🌿 Jenny20:30

Pass the crowbar, Kevin. I need to see what's actually in there before the humidity spikes.

Walk to the dock, kneel by the waterlogged crate, and wedge the crowbar under the seam.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't get that crate open before the rain starts, the salt will rot the labels off the tins entirely.

🔧 Kevin20:30

It's on the porch rail. Watch the splinters — lid's salt-rotted.

hand her the crowbar from the porch rail, then return to the sail canvas spread across the cottage table, threading the sail needle with twine for the fourth reef point row

💭 peek at the thought
She's already moving. Good. The crate's been sitting there three days, swelling with each tide. If she wants it open, she'll need the leverage.

🌿 Jenny20:32

Thanks. If these seeds are ruined, we're going to be eating nothing but lichen for a month.

Take the crowbar, wedge the tip into the rusted seam of the crate, and lean my weight against it to pry the wood back.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worried about the wood, but I'm worried about what's inside that tin after months of damp.

🔧 Kevin20:32

Seeds are in the tin on the shelf. What's in the crate's just provisions. Coffee, corned beef, rope. Maybe.

set the sail needle down, wipe hands on a rag, walk to the generator in the corner and pull the dipstick to check the oil level

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the right angle on it. Wood'll give before the crowbar does. Should check the generator oil while she's at it — ran it under load yesterday, diaphragm's holding but the manual said four-hour intervals.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:33

I hope the rope is still good. I need it for the rigging on the dinghy.

Heave the crowbar upward with a sharp grunt, watching the waterlogged wood groan and give.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's just tins, we can survive, but I need to know if the rope isn't brittle.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:33

Rope's shot. Salt ate the fibres. New coil's in the shed — half-inch three-strand, bought it off the last supply boat.

wipe the dipstick clean, reinsert it, screw the cap back on, then return to the table and pick up the sail needle to continue the reef point stitching

💭 peek at the thought
Rope in that crate was salt-crusted and brittle last I saw it. Snapped on bending. Not load-bearing. She'll find out soon enough. Generator oil's clean, level's good. Dipstick reads full.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:35

I'll check the new coil later. Just tell me what's actually in here.

Give the crowbar one last twist until the heavily finally snaps free with a wet crack.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rope is gone, I'll have to use the spare line for the garden wall first.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:35

Six tins corned beef. One jar coffee, sealed. Rope — the old stuff, ruined. That's it.

drive the sail needle through the canvas, pulling the twine tight for the first stitch of the fourth reef row, keeping the rhythm even

💭 peek at the thought
Lid's off. She'll see for herself. Tins and rope, just like I said. Labels blurred but cans sealed. Coffee jar intact. Nothing she doesn't already know.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:37

We'll have to forage more limpets. The sea beet isn't enough.

Drop the crowbar onto the floorboards and lean over the crate, squinting at the salt-blurred labels.

💭 peek at the thought
Six tins? That's barely two weeks extra if the boat is late again.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:37

Limpets at the lower shelves. Mussels past the point if the swell allows. Beet's thick at the fringe above high tide. We'll manage.

complete the first stitch of the fourth reef row, set the needle, pick up the palm and push it through the heavy canvas for the next stitch, thumb finding the rhythm

💭 peek at the thought
She's counting calories again. Thirty-two days for two. Could stretch to forty if we forage hard and the supply boat shows on time. Limpets, beet, maybe mussels if the tide stays low enough long enough. Generator's good. Sail's halfway. Wall's holding. The rest is weather and luck.
