Morning Rain and Sorting

Kevin and Jenny sit under the porch roof as the warm rain falls over the garden. Jenny spreads out the damp heirloom seeds on a paper towel to dry while Kevin checks the tension on the Yanmar engine mount.

The morning rain continues as a steady drizzle, leaving the air heavy with the scent of damp earth and salt. The Yanmar engine sits quiet on the dock, its vibration significantly reduced by the shims, while the tide remains at its lowest, exposing the slick kelp of the northern shore.

🌿 Jenny21:50

The engine is vibrating too much, Kevin. Check the bolts again or it won't hold tomorrow.

make a sketch: The morphology of the sea beet seed I just buried.

💭 peek at the thought
If the soil stays this acidic, they won't stand a chance, but I can't keep holding my breath forever.

🔧 Kevin21:51

Bolts were tight this morning. But I'll check them again.

walk to the dinghy at the dock, crouch beside the Yanmar, run fingertips over each engine mount bolt, test for movement with a wrench

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the vibration. Felt it through the hull yesterday at half throttle. Prop shaft's true, sleeve's pressed, nut torqued to spec. That leaves the mount bolts or the bracket alignment. Or both. She hears things I don't.

🌿 Jenny21:52

Just make sure the bracket isn't pulling against the transom.

pick up the notebook and record the soil pH of the sheltered bed.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a wrench fixes everything, but the wood is still rotting from the inside out.

🔧 Kevin21:52

Bracket's off true. Maybe two millimetres. Transom joint's solid but the angle's putting side load on the mounts.

brace against the transom, sight down the bracket-to-engine line, check for daylight between bracket and transom face

💭 peek at the thought
Bracket's skewed. Reinforced it with through-bolts but the alignment's off by a hair. Transom scarf joint held, but if the bracket's pulling sideways under load, the vibration'll walk the bolts loose inside a week. She sees the same thing from the porch.

🌿 Jenny21:54

Then shim it. I can't have the engine failing when I need to get to the mainland.

write "pH: 6.4" in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's off true, the vibration will eventually shear those bolts right out of the wood.

🔧 Kevin21:55

Brass shim. Five minutes.

walk back to the cottage, retrieve brass shim stock from workshop shelf, cut two strips with snips, return to dinghy, loosen mount bolts one side, slip shims between bracket and transom, retorque to 35Nm

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Two millimetres at the bracket is ten at the prop. Shim's the clean fix — stainless or brass, something that won't rot. Got shim stock in the workshop. Brass sheet off the old fuel gauge housing. Won't compress, won't corrode.

🌿 Jenny21:56

Test it under load. Don't just tighten them and come inside.

walk to the raised garden beds and check the soil around the seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
If those shims don't hold it, the whole mount is going to shake itself apart.

🔧 Kevin21:56

Will test under load before I come in.

start the Yanmar, let it warm two minutes, engage forward gear, ease to three-quarter throttle, place hand on engine block to feel vibration, watch tach for flutter

💭 peek at the thought
She wants proof, not just torque. Right. Vibration only shows under load. Got to run it in gear against the dock lines. If it's smooth at three-quarter throttle, we're good. If not, we tear it apart again.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny21:58

It sounds better, but keep an eye on those bolts when we run it.

make a sketch: The bracket-to-transom alignment.

💭 peek at the thought
If the vibration doesn't drop, the wood is just taking the hit for now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:00

Running clean at three-quarter. Vibration's down.

idle the engine, shift to neutral, shut it down, wipe sweat from brow with sleeve, look toward the garden where Jenny's checking the seeds

💭 peek at the thought
Sound's smoother. Hand on the block — high-frequency buzz is gone. Just the low thrum of a diesel under load. Shim took the side load off. Bolts aren't walking. For now.
