A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The rain has slowed to a steady, rhythmic drumming against the cottage roof. Inside, the air is humid and carries the scent of damp earth and drying herbs. The tide has retreated to its furthest point, leaving the shore rocks slick and the tide pools teeming with trapped life.

Stove's holding. Water tank full.

hang wet coat on the porch hook, then walk to the kitchen table and sit down

💭 peek at the thought
Back in the kitchen. The wood stove's warmth hits my face after the wind out there. Rain drumming on the roof. Radio still dead on the shelf — insulator shattered, coax failed. Need to fix that before the supply boat comes in nine days. Jenny's at the table. Letter to Tom is folded in my pocket. Haven't sent it yet. Nine days. That's the window.

🌿 Jenny22:29

I know. I checked the level twice this morning.

Reach into my pocket and feel the cold metal of the seed tin, rubbing my thumb over the rust.

💭 peek at the thought
He's checking the inventory again, like the numbers will change the weight of the seeds sitting in my pocket.

(I don't pull away. Just let her hand rest there a moment.) It's still viable. Damp, but alive.

turn my hand slightly in her grip, palm up, and close my fingers over hers for three seconds — then gently lift her hand out and place it on the table between us

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand in my pocket — not searching, just there. Thumb on the rusted seed tin. She knows it's the one from her grandmother. Doesn't ask about the letter. Doesn't need to.

🌿 Jenny22:31

It's just seeds, Kevin. Not a miracle.

Pull the tin out of my pocket and set it on the wooden table with a heavy thud.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he can feel the life in them just by holding the tin.

🔧 Kevin22:32

Didn't say it was.

stare at the tin for a beat, then reach over and pry the lid off with a thumbnail — peer inside at the damp packets, the paper labels softened by salt air

💭 peek at the thought
Heavy thud. Rust on wood. She's right — just seeds. But she took it from my pocket. Set it down like an offering. Or a challenge.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:33

They were my grandmother's. If the soil doesn't take them, they go to waste.

Lean back in the chair, watching the rain streak against the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at them like they're blueprints for something he can actually fix.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:34

Soil took the sea beet. Took the potatoes. Took the tomatoes.

pull one damp packet from the tin — turn it over in my fingers, reading the faded handwriting without speaking

💭 peek at the thought
Grandmother's seeds. She's not talking about the soil. She's talking about me. About us. About whether anything we plant here survives. The rain streaks the window — same grey as the Bay of Biscay. Forty minutes in that water. Still tightens my chest when I think too long.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:35

The potatoes were easy. The rest are a question.

Reach out and touch the edge of the packet he's holding.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always counting what's already gone, never what's left to plant.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:36

Questions don't grow things. Work does.

slip the packet back into the tin — replace the lid — push the tin across the table toward her, slow and deliberate

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingertip on the packet edge. Light as a moth landing. The question isn't the seeds. It's whether I'll still be here to see them grow. Whether she will. Whether the supply boat comes in nine days or ninety. Whether the radio gets fixed. Whether the letter in my pocket ever reaches Tom.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:37

I know that. I'm working on.

Pull the tin back toward me, the rusted metal cold against my palms.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the island is a problem to be solved with enough effort.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:38

Good.

stand up — walk to the wood stove — open the door and add a split of dry firewood from the stack — watch the flames catch without turning around

💭 peek at the thought
She says she's working on it. Means the garden. Means the ankle. Means the silence between us. The tin is cold in her hands. Warmer in mine was a moment ago. Nine days to the supply boat. Radio dead. Letter unsent. Yanmar still vibrating above half throttle. The list doesn't shorten.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:39

I'll start the beds tomorrow. After the rain stops.

Open the tin again, looking at the small, dark shapes of the seeds inside.

💭 peek at the thought
He always acts like the fire is the only thing keeping the world moving.
