The Rising Pressure

Kevin tightens the tarp lashesings as the sky darkens over the garden. Jenny sits on the bench, spreading damp heirloom seeds across paper towels while the air grows heavy with humidity.

Kevin drove a three-inch brass screw into the stripped top hinge hole of the cottage porch door from outside while Jenny braced the door from inside; the screw bit solidly and the door now latches cleanly. Jenny then limped back to the stove area, wrapped the damp heirloom seed packets in muslin squares secured with rubber bands, taped the seed tin lid with two wraps of self-amalgamating tape, and placed it on the highest kitchen shelf.

Storm's close. Wind'll shift northeast inside an hour. Get the cloth wraps from the shelf — we'll bundle the viable ones and seal the tin tight.

cinch the last tarp corner down with a timber batten and check the garden wall base for water pooling

💭 peek at the thought
Humidity's spiking. She's spreading them thin — smart. But paper towels won't hold if the rain comes sideways. Need to get the cloth wraps and the tin sealed before the front hits.

🌿 Jenny01:49

I've got them. way ensure the stove stays dry.

Jenny gathers the damp paper towels and moves them closer to the warmest part of the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
If the humidity stays this high, these will mold before they ever see the soil. I'm terrified of losing her only legacy.

Tin's open. Wrap first, then stove. Cloth bundles, rubber bands, straight into the tin — lid tight, tape the seal.

step inside, grab the muslin squares and rubber bands from the pantry shelf, set them on the table beside the seed tin

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead — stove's the only dry heat we've got. Good. But the tin's still open on the table. If the humidity hits ninety percent before those seeds are wrapped, we lose the lot.

🌿 Jenny01:51

I'm on it now.

Jenny carefully wraps the damp seed packets in the muslin squares and securing them with rubber bands.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being so practical, and it makes me feel small because I haven't actually planted anything yet.

🔧 Kevin01:52

Tape's on the radio shelf. Two wraps round the lid seam. Then move it to the top shelf, back corner.

watch the porch door — wind's gusting, latch is holding but the hinge screws are loose in the frame

💭 peek at the thought
Hands are steady. She knows the rhythm. Good. Once the bundles are in, tape the lid and get the tin off the table — onto the shelf, away from any splash if the porch door blows.

🌿 Jenny01:53

They'll be safe there.

Jenny wraps the tape around the lid of the tin and carries it to the highest shelf in the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
If I put them on the top shelf, they're safe from the damp, but I'm still procrastinating.

🔧 Kevin01:54

Door hinge. Top screw's stripped. Got a three-inch brass in the toolbox?

pull the toolbox from under the workbench, flip the latch, scan for brass screws

💭 peek at the thought
Tin's secure. She's fast when it matters. Now the porch door — if that hinge gives, we lose the draft seal and the stove smoke backs up. Need a longer screw or a wedge before the full squall hits.

🌿 Jenny01:55

I'll check the kit.

Jenny sets the tin on the high shelf and limps toward the workbench, wincing at her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing with every step, and the air is getting heavy to breathe.

🔧 Kevin01:56

Found it. Hold the door steady — I'll drive it from outside. Then you sit. No discussion.

step out into the wind, grip the door frame, drive the three-inch brass screw into the stripped hinge hole with the ratchet until it bites solid

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow but not stopping. That ankle's worse than this morning. After the door, she needs to sit — no argument. I'll wedge the hinge myself so she can rest.

🌿 Jenny01:57

I'm holding it.

Jenny moves to the door, leaning her weight against the wood to keep it steady while he works.

💭 peek at the thought
He always decides what's best for me before I can even voice the frustration.
