The Evening Rain Breaks

The first heavy drops hit the tin roof with a sudden roar, drowning out the sound of the surf.

Kevin inspected Jenny's ankle and found spreading redness and heat above the brace, signs of infection rather than simple strain. He cleaned the wound with boiled water and vinegar, applied a poultice of crushed sea beet leaves, and rewrapped it more loosely to allow drainage. Jenny, meanwhile, moved the heirloom seed packets closer to the stove and managed to dry the tomato and pepper packets, though the basil remained moldy and was set aside.

Rain’s picking up. I’ll check the seed tin and rewrap your ankle — keep it elevated if you can.

walk to the porch shelf, lift the plastic tarp slightly to peek at the heirloom seed tin, then go inside and kneel by Jenny, gently unfasten the wet fabric strips, and rewrap her ankle with dry strips and firmer driftwood splints, checking

💭 peek at the thought
Rain’s come heavy. Good for the tank, bad for the damp seeds. Jenny’s ankle’s still throbbing under the splint — I didn’t wrap it tight enough earlier. Need to redo it before it gets worse.

🌿 Jenny03:23

Be careful with the brace. The ankle is screaming today.

Jenny shifts the drying seed packets closer to the heat of the wood stove and winces as Kevin touches her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If the humidity climbs any higher, those tomato seeds will rot before the final even arrives. I can't lose grandmother's tin to a damp kitchen.

🔧 Kevin03:23

Hold still. I'm looking.

gently peel back the splint and fabric to inspect the ankle and lower leg for red streaks, heat, or discoloration, then rewrap with dry strips and adjust the driftwood splints for better support without cutting circulation

💭 peek at the thought
She's in more pain than she let on. The swelling's tracked up — I can feel heat through the fabric. Red streaks would mean sepsis. Need to check. And the seeds — basil's lost, tomato and pepper still viable if I get them closer to the stove.

🌿 Jenny03:25

It's just the strain from the dock ring. I think.

Jenny leans her head back against the wall and watches the smoke dance over the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being careful, but the skin feels too tight. If it swells more, I won't get to the north ridge tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin03:25

Dock ring was two days ago. This heat's not strain. Let me look.

lift the fabric fully off her ankle and calf, turn her leg to the firelight, and scan the skin from toes to knee for spreading redness, streaks, or shiny tight swelling

💭 peek at the thought
She's minimizing. The heat I felt wasn't from exertion. If there are red streaks tracking up her calf, we're past "just strain." I need to see the skin — properly — and I need the antibiotic decision to be made before morning. The seeds can wait five minutes.

🌿 Jenny03:27

It's the humidity. Everything swells in here.

Jenny pulls her leg back slightly, her eyes fixed on the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The skin is hot. If he sees an infection, he'll want to call the boat early.
