Afternoon Heat

The thickening clouds blot the sun further as the tide begins to turn inward. Kevin and Jenny meet on the porch to discuss the final preparations before the boat's arrival in three days.

Kevin spent the afternoon spreading crushed lime across the garden beds to counteract the soil acidity. Jenny focused on the radio mast, inspecting the coax splice for signs of corrosion before the coming storm. The sky thickens as the humidity rises with the tide.

🌿 Jenny03:57

The pH is dropping faster than the charts predicted; I need to use the lime on the beds before the rain hits.

wipe the grit from my hands and stand up, my knees popping as I look at the grey sky.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is too dry, and if I don't plant now, I'll just be watching my grandmother's legacy turn to dust.

Lime's crushed and ready by the garden shed. Want a hand spreading it?

walk to the garden shed and grab the lime sack

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's holding steady but the sky's bruising purple at the edges. She's right about the pH — untreated beds are sitting at 5.5 and the lime won't work if the rain washes it straight through. Need to move on this before the front hits proper.

🌿 Jenny03:59

I've got it. Just make sure the radio mast is secured before the wind picks up.

walk toward the garden beds and grab the hand trowel from the porch bench.

💭 peek at the thought
If he helps, he'll just crush the seedlings with those heavy boots. I need to be precise here.

🔧 Kevin03:59

Mast's next. Coax splice needs checking anyway.

climb the radio mast to inspect the coax splice and insulator seal

💭 peek at the thought
She's taking the garden solo. Means she's moving better than she lets on, or she's decided to stop letting on. Either way, the mast's my watch. The insulator replacement held last blow but the coax splice at the bracket could still chafe if the mast pumps in a sustained easterly.

🌿 Jenny04:01

Be careful up there, the wood is getting slick from the humidity.

kneel by the first garden bed and begin scattering the crushed lime over the cracked earth.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's being useful for once while I try to save some Life in this parched dirt.

🔧 Kevin04:01

Got it. Three points.

test the rung grip with my weight before putting full load on it, then ascend slowly, checking each joint as I go

💭 peek at the thought
Humidity's up, wood's sweating. One slip and I'm on my back in the thistles. Three points of contact, slow hands — this mast's seen worse weather than today's damp.

🌿 Jenny04:03

Focus on the insulator. The salt air is eating through the wiring out here.

dig a small hole in the soil to check the depth of the lime application.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pH doesn't stabilize, the whole batch is gone. I can't afford to lose these seeds now.

🔧 Kevin04:03

Checking the wire entry. That's where it fails.

inspect the insulator base where the wire enters, looking for tape lift, corrosion, or moisture tracking down the coax core

💭 peek at the thought
Salt gets into everything. The new porcelain's sealed with self-amalgamating tape but the wire entry's the weak point — tape shrinks in heat, cracks in cold. If moisture tracks down the core, the SWR climbs and the radio goes deaf. That's the only line to the mainland.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:05

If that seal is gone, we'll have to re-wrap it before the storm.

mix the lime into the soil with my fingers, trying to reach the roots.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is parched, and if the rain doesn't come, I'm just burying hope in dust.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:05

Lower wrap's lifting. Salt in the gap. Re-wrapping now.

peel back the self-amalgamating tape from the lower turn, clean the salt crust from the coax and insulator base with a rag, then re-wrap tight with the remaining tape, stretching it to fuse

💭 peek at the thought
Tape's holding at the top wrap but the lower turn's lifting a hair where the coax flexes against the bracket. Salt crust in the gap. Another week of this wind and it'll wick water straight into the braid. Need to peel back, clean, and re-seal with what's left on the roll.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:07

Make it tight. The salt won't wait for a second chance.

look up at the mast, watching him work against the darkening sky.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually paying attention to the details for once, but the garden is still drying out.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:07

Holding. Two fresh turns, fused clean. Bracket bolts next.

check the insulator bracket bolts for looseness, tightening any that have backed off with the mast movement

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching. Good. Means she's not at the beds. The tape's stretching clean — no air pockets, good fusion. Two more turns overlapping the old upper wrap, then pinch the end hard so it bonds to itself. That'll hold the season if the bracket doesn't work loose.
