Evening Rising Tide
The rain slows to a drizzle as the sun begins to set, the tide reaches the height of the dock pilings.
The tide has surged past the predicted marks, lapping the lower planks of the dock. Kevin has secured the dinghy and reinforced the mooring ring, but the salt spray and rising water are testing the rotting timber. The sky thickens over the island, and the air is heavy with the scent of a coming front.
The water is coming in fast.
walk back from the shrine toward the cottage.

Yeah, I saw it creeping up. I’ll go check the dinghy lines—give me two minutes.
walk to the dock at a quick pace, eyes on the water lapping the pilings

Don't take too long, the current is turning.
stop at the edge of the garden and watch the water.

Won't be long.
step onto the dock boards, crouch at the stern cleat to check the spring line tension and the mooring ring's movement in its mortise

Be careful, that board is loose.
pull my sketchbook from my pocket and sketch the way the water hits the stones.

Thanks.
shift weight to the sound board beside it, grab the stern spring line, haul it tight and cleat it off with a round turn and two half hitches, then crouch at the mooring ring to see how much play it has in the mortise under this tide

The tide is higher than the charts predicted.
sharpen my pencil and capture the dark line of the water against the wood.

Charts don't know this place. Spring tide on top of the low pressure.
pull the heavy wrench from my belt, tighten the four nyloc nuts on the doubler plate another quarter turn each, then stand and check the bow line's angle to the forward cleat
