The Weight of Air

Kevin and Jenny stand over the waterlogged crate as the overcast sky deepens. The air is still and the barometer continues its slow descent toward 990 hPa.

The morning air is heavy and humid, the overcast sky pressing low over the island. The barometer continues its slow decline to 991 hPa, signaling a shift in the dry season. The tide is rising steadily, lapping at the lower edge of the dock.

🔧 Kevin07:17

Tide's low enough. Stand back.

pry open the waterlogged crate with the crowbar

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still dropping. 991 and steady last I checked, but that steady won't hold. Crate's been sitting on the porch since the last storm — tide brought it in, and I've been putting off opening it. Jenny's watching me watch it. Wood's swollen tight, nails rusted through. Could be supplies, could be junk. Either way, the crowbar's in my hand and the tide's dropping. Time to see what the sea gave us.

🌿 Jenny07:17

Careful with the bar, the wood is soft from rot.

Step back toward the porch and watch the crate for splinters.

💭 peek at the thought
He's forcing it again; the wood is going to splinter if he polarization using that angle.

🔧 Kevin07:18

Kevin — work the crowbar under the lid slowly, prying at each corner to break the rust seal before lifting

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the wood's punky. Crowbar'll go through it if I'm not careful. Let the bar do the work, not force.

🌿 Jenny07:19

Slow down, don't snap the wood inside.

Reach for my notebook to sketch the state of the wood once it's open.

💭 peek at the thought
If that lid gives way, I need to see if the seeds stayed dry despite the humidity.

🔧 Kevin07:21

Lid's coming. Watch the nails.

lift the lid clear and set it aside, then peer into the crate

💭 peek at the thought
She's sketching rot patterns. Means she's thinking about the garden beds, or the dock, or just documenting. Smart. The lid's giving — nail heads popping one by one. Smell hits first: salt, diesel, old canvas. And something sweet underneath. Coffee, maybe.

🌿 Jenny07:22

Is it dry in there?

Lean in to inspect the corners of the crate for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
If the interior is damp, the whole batch is a loss to the salt.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:22

Damp at the bottom. Contents on slats — stayed mostly dry. Tins, rope, coffee. And a sealed tin marked E.

reach in and lift the coffee jar first, wiping the salt crust from the glass

💭 peek at the thought
Not dry. Damp seeps up from the bottom boards — condensation or seawater wicked up during the crossing. But the contents sit on slats, raised a finger's width. Smart packing, or lucky. Tins mostly. Labels blurred but readable enough. Coffee jar intact, seal holding. Rope coil in the corner, new by the look of it — half-inch three-strand, not the brittle stuff. And a metal tin, heavy, rusted, marked with an 'E' stamped in the lid. Sealed tight. That one feels deliberate.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:23

Let me see the tin.

Reach into the crate to take the tin from Kevin, checking the lid for any sign of moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
If the slats worked, the seeds might have a chance. I need to check the seal.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:24

Don't force the lid if it's stuck. Bring it inside.

pull the tinned provisions out next — mackerel, corned beef, some kind of fruit — stacking them on the porch floorboards

💭 peek at the thought
She takes it careful, turning it in her hands. The 'E' stamp is clean — someone punched it after the lid was sealed, not before. No water marks on the threads. Whatever's inside, someone wanted it found. Or wanted it kept. She's frowning at the weight of it. Heavier than coffee, lighter than lead shot. Could be seeds. Could be documents. Could be nothing.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:25

I've got it.

Carry the tin into the kitchen and set it on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The seal looks intact, but if the air got in, it's all just rot.
