A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin works on the Yanmar engine in the dinghy to isolate the vibration while the tide recedes. Jenny tends the garden and prepares the heirloom seeds as the clouds thicken and the air pressure continues to drop.

Kevin — walk onto the porch, grip the crowbar, wedge it under the crate's lid

💭 peek at the thought
The porch boards are warm under my boots. Crate still sits where the tide left it — salt-crusted, swollen, nails fused by rust. Barometer's dropped another point since dawn. Jenny's inside. I can hear the stove door close. She hasn't asked about the crate. Hasn't asked about the letter in my pocket either. Engine's torqued. Prop shaft runs true. Vibration's gone at idle. Need to test it under load before I call it done.

🌿 Jenny07:35

way, Kevin. The wood is soft today.

Step back and watch him pry the crate open.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to splinter the wood, it's swollen from the humidity.

🔧 Kevin07:36

Wood's holding the nails. Not the other way round.

shift the crowbar to the corner seam, drive it in slow, lever against the side wall instead of the lid

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Swollen fibres, salt-rotten. The lid'll come apart before the nails give. Should've started at the sides. Too late now.

🌿 Jenny07:37

way don't crush the tin inside.

Squat down on my heels, watching for the wood to give.

💭 peek at the thought
He's using the seam to avoid the nails, but the pressure is still high.

🔧 Kevin07:38

Tin's sealed. Should be dry inside.

brace my boot against the crate's end, twist the crowbar to widen the seam, feel for give in the wood grain

💭 peek at the thought
She's close enough I can see the salt cracks in her knuckles. Watching my hands, not my face. Tin's probably heirloom seed — the one she's been drying. If it's wet, we lose the lot. Crate's giving, but slow. Need more leverage without splitting the ends.

🌿 Jenny07:39

If the moisture got in, we've already lost them.

Reach for my notebook to sketch the state of the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
If that seal isn't airtight, the whole tin is just rot.

🔧 Kevin07:40

Tape held. Wax under the lid. Might still be dry.

pry the side plank free, lift it slow, peek inside at the tin's condition

💭 peek at the thought
She's already mourning them. I can't tell her the tin's double-sealed — self-amalgamating tape over the lid, wax under that. She'd say I'm hoping against hope. Maybe I am. But the crate's yielding now — one side plank's lifting. If the tin's dry, we save the seeds. If not, we learn. Either way, better to know.

🌿 Jenny07:41

Look closely. Don't rush.

Lean in to see the seal on the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If there's condensation in there, the seeds will be mush.
