The Turning Tides

The tide continues to recede, exposing more of the rotting wood beneath the dock as the rain tapers to a drizzle.

The air is heavy and still at 32°C as the tide sits at its lowest, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools. Kevin is crouched by the dock, probing the rotted wood of the mooring ring, while Jenny works in the garden, checking the moisture levels of the heirloom seedlings.

🔧 Kevin08:41

Rot's worse than it looked at high tide. Going to need a proper sister beam and through-bolts. You want the crowbar or the drill?

walk to the dock and probe the mortise with the nail puller to find solid wood for bolt placement

💭 peek at the thought
The rot goes deeper than I thought. Cedar wedges won't hold in this punk wood. Need to sister the beam and through-bolt the ring to solid timber.

🌿 Jenny08:41

Give me the crowbar. I want to see how deep the decay goes before we commit to the bolts.

way wipes mud from her hands and stands up, walking toward the dock to inspect the damage Kevin is uncovering.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rot has reached the main beam, the whole structure won't hold the boat in the next storm; I need to see if the core is still sound before we waste the good sister timber.

🔧 Kevin08:42

Here. Take your time. I’ll get the tape measure and mark what’s solid.

hand Jenny the crowbar and walk back to the cottage for the tape measure and a piece of chalk to mark sound wood limits on the dock beam

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — better to know the full extent before we drive bolts into air. Let her probe, then we’ll decide.

🌿 Jenny08:43

Be careful with the chalk, I need the marks to be precise.

way kneels on the slick timber and wedges the crowbar into a gap, prying back a layer of grey, crumbling rot to reveal the heart of the beam.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood looks soft like wet cardboard; if I can't find a solid grain, this whole section is going to float away next gale.

🔧 Kevin08:44

Rot’s eaten back about twelve inches. We’ll sister the beam with a pressure-treated two-by and run four 150mm stainless bolts through ring, old beam, and new — washers and nylocs both sides.

return with the tape measure, chalk, and a pressure-treated two-by-four from the cottage shed, then mark the cut line on the new timber where it’ll overlap the sound beam by at least six inches on each end

💭 peek at the thought
The beam’s punk for nearly a foot back from the mortise. We’ll need to sister it with a new two-by-four and through-bolt the ring into both old and new timber.

🌿 Jenny08:45

Jenny — way brushes away the wet wood fibers with the palm of her hand, pressing against the grain to see if it yields or stays firm.

💭 peek at the thought
Twelve inches is a lot to lose, but if the core is solid, the sistering should hold the weight of the dinghy. everSAY: If it's deeper than that, we'll have to replace the whole span, not just sister it.

🔧 Kevin08:46

Heart’s firm where you’re probing. I’ll cut the sister to length and drill the bolt holes while you keep cleaning out the rot.

measure and mark the two-by-four for a four-foot sister, then walk back to the cottage saw to cut it to length, bringing the drill, torque wrench, and bolts with me to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
The heartwood’s still solid where she’s pressing — good. We can tie into that. Now to cut the sister and get the bolts ready.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny08:47

Make sure the holes are aligned perfectly, I don't want the bolts splitting the new wood.

way uses the waybar to scrape out the remaining soft pulpy decay, clearing a path for the sister beam to sit flush against the solid wood.

💭 peek at the thought
If the core is solid, we can save this, but I'm tired of fighting the island's salt and rot.
