The Heavy Air

Kevin and Jenny stand on the damp dock planks as they inspect the new tangle of driftwood and flotsam caught against the pilings. The air is motionless and warm while the tide laps quietly against the wood.

The morning air is heavy and still as the tide begins to rise against the dock. Kevin and Jenny stand by the water, assessing the stability of the dock planks and planning the day ahead before the supply boat arrives in eight days.

🌿 Jenny08:13

The current is pulling harder today. We need to check the stability of those two planks before the boat arrives.

Squat down to poke the rotten wood with the toe of my boot, checking for softness.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is bringing in more debris than usual; maybe the island is waking up before the storm.

🔧 Kevin08:13

I’ll pull them out and sister in the sound cores we saved. Bronze sleeve’s ready — just need to torque the through-bolts to 35Nm.

walk to the shed, grab the crowbar and two salvaged plank cores, return to dock, pry up the rotten planks, slide in the sound cores, drill pilot holes, insert the longer stainless through-bolts with washers and nyloc nuts, torque to 35Nm us

💭 peek at the thought
The tide’s rising faster than it should, and those two planks are giving way under her boot. If they fail now, the mooring ring won’t hold when the supply boat comes. I need to act before the wood gives completely.

🌿 Jenny08:15

Don't over-tighten, or the core will split the dry-rot.

Reach into my pocket for my notebook and begin to sketch the way the driftwood is wrapping around the jetty.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so efficient with the hardware, but the wood is still old and tired at the edges.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:15

Noted. I’ll feel for the bite.

torque the through-bolts to 35Nm, pause at each to listen for cracking, back off a quarter turn on the second bolt when the timber groans, step back and check the ring for play

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — dry rot cracks like old bone. 35Nm is the limit, not the target. I’ll back off a quarter turn if the wood sings.

🌿 Jenny08:17

It looks solid enough for the supply boat's weight, but watch the tide.

Wipe the graphite off the page with my thumb and look at the horizon line.

💭 peek at the thought
It's holding for now, but the salt air is eating the new wood already.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:17

I’ll pull the flotsam clear after lunch. Low tide’s in two hours — best time to work.

walk to the dinghy, grab the boat hook and a coil of new half-inch rope, return to the dock, begin snagging the driftwood with the hook and hauling it clear onto the beach, stacking it above the high-tide line

💭 peek at the thought
The ring holds for now, but the tide’s still coming in. If the wind shifts tonight, that driftwood tangle could lever the pilings sideways. I should clear it before dark.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny08:19

Don't strain yourself, the tide's coming in faster than you think.

Stand up from the dock and walk toward the garden bed, feeling the ache in my lower back.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always moving, fixing the world while I'm just watching it rot.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:19

I’ll use the cleat. Let the water do the work.

tie off the rope to the dock cleat with a round turn and two half-hitches, pay out slack as the tide lifts the driftwood, use the boat hook to guide the larger pieces clear of the pilings, stack them on the beach above the storm line

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching the water, not me. The current’s pulling the driftwood back as fast as I haul it. I need to anchor the rope to the cleat and use the tide to help, not fight it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:21

I'll check the pH again. The soil feels too heavy today.

Kneel in the dirt of the back patch and pull the water test kit from my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the water is a partner here, but the island just takes and takes.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:21

The beds by the wall read 6.8 last week. Lime’s holding.

walk to the cottage porch, sit on the step, pull out the notebook and pencil, write one paragraph in the letter to Tom

💭 peek at the thought
The driftwood’s clear. The ring holds. She’s gone to the garden — soil pH, damping-off, the usual. I should finish the letter to Tom while the quiet holds. One paragraph. That’s what I said I’d do today.
