The Rising Tide
The tide is now lapping at the lower dock pilings. Kevin prepares the tools for the repair while Jenny prepares for the garden inspection.
The tide is high and pushing against the dock. Kevin and Jenny work together to use a crowbar to pry up a section of the rotting timber. Kevin holds the weight of the lever steady with a spruce shim, while Jenny steps into the gap to probe the wood with her boot to see how deep the rot has traveled into the main beam.
The tide is turning early, Kevin. Grab the crowbar; the lower wood is already soft.
Walk to the edge of the jetty and kick the rotten plank to test its stability.

Got it.
grab the crowbar from the tool pile and move to the seaward end of the dock, wedging the bar under the first rotten plank to lever it up

Easy. The pilings are pulpy there. Use the timber for leverage while you lift.
Reach into the woodpile to find a sturdy piece of spruce to shim the gap.

Right.
slide a length of sound spruce under the crowbar as a fulcrum, then bear down slow to peel the rotten plank without snapping the piling face

Hold it right there. I need to see how deep the rot has gotten into the main beam.
Step into the gap and probe the surface of the wood with the tip of my boot.

Take your time.
hold the crowbar steady, keeping the plank lifted just enough for her to probe, weight braced on the back foot
