Approaching Front

Rain lashes against the dock as the wind picks up from the west. Kevin secures the heavy-duty tarp over the garden beds from the porch while Jenny checks the tension on the moorings against the downpour.

The rain intensifies into a heavy western downpour, turning the garden patch into a slick slurry. While Kevin successfully secures the garden tarp by hammering stakes deep and lashing the corners to the stone wall, preventing the wind from ripping it, Jenny struggles with the dock and finds the dinghy line straining as the rising tide begins to lift it against the pilings.

Watch the far corner, Kevin, the wind is catching the canvas!

Walk to the dinghy and pull the stern line tighter.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is going to wash out the back patch if I don't get those stakes down tomorrow.

On it — I’ll get the far corner and check the grommets.

run to the far corner of the garden tarp, pull it tight, and re-stake it with the spare wooden stakes from the porch, then hammer them in hard against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind’s picking up, and that tarp’s not going to hold if we don’t get every corner down. Jenny’s already on the dinghy — I need to move fast before the rain soaks through and adds weight.

way make sure they're deep enough, the soil is turning to mush!

Lean against the damp dock piling and watch the tide rise.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to snap the stakes if he hammers them like that.

Driving them deeper now. If they pull, I’ll lash the corners to the garden wall stones.

hammer each stake until the top sits flush with the soil, then kick dirt over the base and tamp it with my boot; check all four corners, then grab the coil of half-inch rope from the porch and run a lashing from the tarp’s far grommet to th

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — the ground’s already soft from days of rain. Shallow stakes will pull out by morning. Need to drive them deeper or find something heavier to weigh it down.

tie the knot twice, Kevin, the pressure is dropping from the west.

Wipe the rain from my eyes and look at the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
if that way rips again, the whole first row is buried in the mud.

Double half-hitch on each corner — it won’t slip under load.

tie a secure double half-hitch at each corner of the tarp, pull tight, and snap the rope to test hold; then move to the dinghy to check the stern line tension as the tide lifts the boat against the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure’s dropping — storm’s moving in fast. She’s watching the horizon like she’s waiting for something, or someone. I can’t let the tarp go now; if it rips, the seedlings are lost.

🌿 Jenny09:13

check the cleat again, it's pulling through the wood.

Step to the edge of the dock and test the weight of the boat.

💭 peek at the thought
if the tide takes the dinghy, I'm stuck here with the weeds.

🔧 Kevin09:13

Cleat’s splitting — I’ll bolt a plate across it.

grab the steel doubler plate from the workshop, hold it over the cleat’s backside, and drive two 100mm stainless screws through the plate and into the dock piling to reinforce the hold, then test the line by pulling hard on the stern rope.

💭 peek at the thought
The cleat’s tearing — old wood, salt-rotted. If it gives, the dinghy will swing into the pilings or drift loose. Need to reinforce it now, before the wind peaks.
