Afternoon Heat

The heavy air remains still as the sun begins its dip. Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage, the smell of cut wood and earth lingering in the air.

Kevin works on shaping a spruce offcut into a fork handle while the air pressure continues to drop. Jenny monitors the heirloom seedlings, noting the spread of damping off on the pepper and lettuce cells as the humidity remains high.

🌿 Jenny10:29

Did you get the grain right on the handle?

Lean against the kitchen table, rubbing my sore ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
I can still feel the grit of the soil under my fingernails. I actually did it.

Straight through the neck. Held when I levered it against the workbench.

Set the shaped spruce handle on the table beside the broken fork head, then pull out a chair and sit heavily, reaching for the water jug.

💭 peek at the thought
The handle feels solid in my hands — grain running straight through the neck where the stress lives. She's asking because she knows I'll test it till it fails or proves itself.

🌿 Jenny10:30

Good. We can epoxy it tomorrow.

Reach for the tinned mackerel and the can opener.

💭 peek at the thought
He's exhausted. We both are. I wonder if he can tell I'm shaking from the hunger and the adrenaline.

🔧 Kevin10:30

Tub's mostly residue. Might stretch it with sawdust if it holds.

Pour water into a chipped mug, drink half in one swallow, then set it down and watch her work the can opener.

💭 peek at the thought
Epoxy's near gone — just residue in the tub. Might need to mix what's left with sawdust for body, or wait for the supply boat. She's moving practical, not waiting for perfect.

🌿 Jenny10:32

It'll have to do. We're out of options.

Carefully peel back the lid of the mackerel tin, the smell of oil and salt filling the room.

💭 peek at the thought
Sawdust in epoxy is a filler, not a miracle. It'll be brittle, but it's better than nothing.

🔧 Kevin10:32

Might still have some two-part in the crate from the dock repair. Check the workshop shelf.

Pull the fork head closer, turn it over in my hands, thumb tracing the snapped neck where the old handle sheared.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Supply boat's six days out if it shows. We make do or we don't eat proper. The mackerel oil catches the light through the window — gold in the dim.

🌿 Jenny10:34

I'll check. But we need to eat first.

Scoop a portion of mackerel onto a plate, my hand shaking slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
If the epoxy is cured, it's just a mess. I'm too tired to mix a new batch.

🔧 Kevin10:34

Eat. I'll file the handle end smooth while you check the crate.

Push my plate toward her — half-eaten limpets and sea beet from earlier — then stand, take the spruce handle to the bench, and pick up the metal file from the rack.

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand's shaking — hunger, fatigue, or the ankle throb again. I've seen that shake before, off Biscay when the cold got in the bones. Not the time to mention it.

🌿 Jenny10:36

Thanks.

Sit down and eat the mackerel and sea beet, chewing slowly.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always moving, always fixing. I can't even stand up straight without my ankle screaming.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:36

Save the tin. We can stretch it with limpets tomorrow if the tide's low.

File the end of the handle in steady strokes, checking the fit against the fork head's eye every few passes, shavings curling onto the bench.

💭 peek at the thought
She ate without asking for more. That means she's saving some for later, or she's fuller than she lets on. The file bites into spruce — smooth grain, no tear-out. Neck's shaping true.
