Morning prep and broken tools

Jenny kneels in the back patch, attempting to clear the soil with the damaged garden fork. Kevin stands nearby, inspecting the broken neck of the tool while the barometer pressure continues its slow drop.

Kevin went to the woodshed to retrieve a spruce offcut and began roughing out the new garden fork handle. Jenny worked in the back patch to test the soil pH, finding it remains too acidic for the heirloom tomatoes.

🌿 Jenny10:01

Don't just stand there, Kevin. Get me the epoxy from the shed.

Jenny drops the broken fork into the dirt and wipes grit from her palms.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't fix this fork, I can't prep the bed, and the soil is too acidic for these heirlooms anyway.

🔧 Kevin10:02

Epoxy won't hold the neck. Tines are bent too. I'll make a new one from the spruce offcut. Handle and tines, one piece. Stronger.

walk to the woodshed and retrieve the spruce offcut, drawknife, and spokeshave

💭 peek at the thought
The tines are bent and the neck's snapped clean through. Epoxy won't hold under leverage — not in this soil, not with the salt. She knows that. She's asking anyway.

🌿 Jenny10:03

Make sure it's straight enough. I don't want another one breaking in a week.

Jenny stands up slowly, her knees popping, and looks at the half-cleared patch.

💭 peek at the thought
way is too soft for tines, it'll snap the moment it hits a root, but my hands are too tired.

🔧 Kevin10:04

I'll true the blank first. Then shape the tines with a taper so they slide in, not pry.

shave the spruce blank to square, sight down it for twist, then begin carving the tine profile with the drawknife, working from the handle end out

💭 peek at the thought
She's right to doubt. Last time I rushed the tine angle and it twisted under load. This time I'll sight down the blank like a spar — true grain, no knots.

🌿 Jenny10:04

Just don't make it too heavy. I need to get those tomatoes in before the boat arrives.

Jenny sits on the garden wall and opens her notebook, sketching the way the weeds are reclaiming the back patch.

💭 peek at the thought
If he uses own, it won't last the season in this rot, but it's better than this rusted mess.

🔧 Kevin10:06

It'll be light. Spruce is. Tines'll be thin at the tips — slide between roots, not tear them. You'll have it by afternoon.

continue shaping the tines with the spokeshave, tapering each to a chisel edge, then round the handle to fit her grip

💭 peek at the thought
She's counting on the boat. Six days out, barometer falling. I've seen supply boats turn back for less. The tomatoes need to go in regardless.

🌿 Jenny10:07

Afternoon is a long time. I could be testing the pH now while you work.

Jenny picks up her pencil, shading the intricate veins of a sea beet leaf on the page.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so sure about the wood, but the salt is what's really going to eat it.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:08

I'll rough it out now. You can test the pH while I let it dry in the shed. Final shape tonight.

carve the basic fork shape — handle, neck, three tines — leaving extra material for final fitting, then carry it to the shed and prop it upright to dry out of direct sun

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Every hour the soil bakes under this sun. The seedlings in the trays won't wait. I can rough the fork now, let it season in the shade, and she can test while I finish.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny10:08

I'll get the test kit. If it's too acidic, we need lime before the boat comes.

Jenny walks to the cottage to retrieve the water test kit from the kitchen, then returns to the back patch.

💭 peek at the thought
If the soil is a 5.5, the seeds will just rot anyway. I need to know for sure.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:10

Log says untreated beds were 5.5 to 5.8. Lime brought the others to 6.8. If it's low, I'll crush what we've got and broadcast it today.

return to the workbench, pick up the spokeshave, and begin the final shaping — thinning the tines, rounding the handle, checking balance in hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead. Lime takes weeks to work into soil. If the pH is low, the tomatoes stall. The boat's six days out — maybe more with this pressure dropping. We do what we can with what we have.
