Afternoon Meal and Garden Report

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen. The smell of boiling water fills the room as they prepare a late lunch and discuss the damage in the garden.

Kevin works on the spruce garden fork while the sky thickens over the island. Jenny heads to the shrine to carve a message into the softwood scrap. The barometer continues to drop as the tide falls.

The crab got into the lime beds. I think half of the seedlings are gone for now.

Drains the limpets into the sink and sets the skillet on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
way stomach is growling so loud it's embarrassing, and I can still see the mess that crab made.

Which trays?

set the garden fork on the porch rail and step inside, wiping hands on trousers

💭 peek at the thought
The lime beds were holding at 6.8–7.0 pH — best soil on the island. If the crab churned through them, the structure's gone and the seedlings with it. We'll need to re-sift, re-lime, and re-sow. Not a day's work. A week's, if the weather holds.

The tomatoes and the peppers. Most of them are just mush now.

Scrapes the limpets off the shells with a knife and starts to sear them.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm too tired to even point out the window, I just want to eat something.

Basil made it?

pull out the wooden chair and sit, leaning forward with elbows on knees

💭 peek at the thought
Tomatoes were at true leaf, hardening off. Peppers never stood a chance — slow starters even without crabs. We've got basil left, and the lettuce that didn't damp off. Might salvage a few tomato stems if the roots held. But the lime beds... that soil took three months to build.

🌿 Jenny11:18

For now. It's the only thing that didn't look like a snack to that monster.

Pushes the skillet of searing limpets toward the center of the stove and reaches for the tinned mackerel.

💭 peek at the thought
The basil is a miracle, but it's probably just waiting for the damping-off to catch up.

🔧 Kevin11:18

Open the mackerel?

reach for the tin opener hanging by the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Basil survives because it smells wrong to them. Strong oils. Could plant a border of it around the beds — sacrificial herbs. Not a fence, but a distraction. Need to check the seed tin for basil stock. And rosemary if we have it. Thyme. Anything aromatic.

🌿 Jenny11:20

Yes, please. I'm starving.

Slides the cooked limpets onto two plates and sets them on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't even think about the calories, I just need something in my system before I shake.

🔧 Kevin11:20

Kevin — punch the opener through the tin lid and work it around the rim, then set the opened tin on the table and take the chair opposite Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
Hunger's been sitting low all morning. Engine work burns it out of you. Limpets and mackerel — salt and fat. Good fuel.
