Evening Shelter

The two of you sit inside the cottage as the smell of coming rain grows in the air. The barometer continues to drop, and the supply boat is still five days away.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

Radio check at dusk. If the trawler's still out there, maybe we'll catch them.

walk to the porch and check the dinghy mooring lines by eye

💭 peek at the thought
The air pressure in my chest matches the barometer — tight, waiting. Five days is a long time if the weather turns proper. Should check the dinghy lines again and the generator lashings before dark.

I'll have the radio ready after I finish this sketch.

Sit at the kitchen table and open the notebook to the latest pH readings.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain hits before the lime settles, the whole morning was just wasted white dust in the dirt.

Sketch looks good. Sea beet's tough — survives where nothing else will.

step outside and feel the wind, then check the garden tarp's south corner (it's been flapping)

💭 peek at the thought
She's quiet again, but the notebook's open — she's watching the soil, same as me. The pH's still low; rain'll wash what little lime we've got straight to sea. Need to think about a windbreak for the north slope, not just more lime.

It knows how to handle the salt, at least.

Stand up and walk out to the garden to check the tarp tension.

💭 peek at the thought
It's tough because it has to be, unlike the seeds sitting in that tin.
