A Quiet Stretch
Back at the cottage.
Kevin sits on the porch to carve a message into a spruce scrap, working around the stubborn grain. Jenny moves to the garden to check the soil pH and tomato rows while managing her throbbing ankle.
Kevin — pick up the spruce offcut from the porch bench and begin carving 'I'm still here' into it with my pocket knife, working slow along the grain.

The grain is going to split if you push that hard.
Sit on the edge of the porch and watch the curls fall to the floorboards.

"Yeah. I know." (I ease off the pressure, let the knife glide with the wood’s natural split, watching the curls catch in the morning light.)
Continue carving, slower now, following the fracture lines in the spruce offcut instead of against them, letting the words emerge shallow and uneven but true.

It's better to have a rough edge than a clean break.
Reach for the rusted seed tin and trace the rust with my thumb.

"Then let it be rough." (I don’t look up. My thumb brushes the fresh shavings—soft, pale, smelling of resin.)
Finish the carving. The letters are uneven, shallow, one stroke too deep on the ‘I’, the ‘e’ in ‘here’ barely there—but they’re legible. I set the offcut down beside the seed tin, not touching it, just leaving it there.

I'm going to check the pH again.
Stand up slowly, rubbing my ankle, and walk toward the lime beds.
