The Rising Tide

The rain lulls into a drizzle, but the tide is high enough now to lapping the bottom of the dock.

Kevin carved 'I'm still here' into the softwood scrap at the shrine and left it beside the 'E' stone. Jenny opened the heirloom seed tin and examined the dried sea beet seeds. A sudden squall hit with wind and heavy rain.

Kevin — walk down to the dock to inspect the mooring ring and tell-tales at high water

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's high enough to slap the dock piles. Good. Means I can check the ring bolt under real load when the boat comes — if it comes. Letter to Tom still sitting there. Radio's quiet. Might as well use the lull.

Watch the tension on that line, the ring is slipping.

Pick up the heirloom seed tin from the table and trace the rusted edges with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tide rises any higher, the salt spray will ruin the new bed before I've even had a chance to test the pH properly.

🔧 Kevin14:08

I'll brace it with the spare rope from the crate till we can bolt it proper. Low tide.

grab the half-inch three-strand rope from the waterlogged crate and rig a temporary spring line from the dock bollard to a shore anchor to take strain off the ring

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the ring's working loose again. Cedar wedges split, oak too. Need steel through-bolts and a doubler plate, but the tide's up now. Can't work on it submerged. She's holding the seed tin like it's the only thing keeping her here. I should say something, but words feel like sand in my mouth.

🌿 Jenny14:08

Just make sure it doesn't slip when the surge hits.

Set the seed tin down on the counter and walk to the porch to watch the rain-slicked garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a rope can hold the island, but the salt is already eating the wood of the pilings.

🔧 Kevin14:10

It'll hold. Sistered knee's sound — checked the tell-tales at spring tide.

secure the temporary spring line with a round turn and two half hitches on the shore anchor, then walk back up to the cottage porch

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the garden drown, not the dock. The ring's the least of it — if the supply boat doesn't make it through this low, we're on rations by next week. Rope's only a bandage. Need the doubler plate and through-bolts at low water. I'll check the tell-tales on the sistered knee while I'm down here.

🌿 Jenny14:11

I'll check the soil again when the rain lets up.

Lean against the doorframe and watch the half-weeded garden bed in the grey light.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is always coming in, and it doesn't care about my schedule.

🔧 Kevin14:12

Kevin — pick up the carving knife and the softwood scrap from the kitchen bench, step outside to the shrine beside the 'E' stone, and begin carving 'I'm still here' into the wood with steady, deliberate strokes

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the soil. She's talking about waiting — for the boat, for the words, for something to grow in this dirt. I said I'd carve the message today. The softwood scrap's still on the bench. Rain's easing. Time to stop putting it off.

🌿 Jenny14:12

Don't leave the wood in the damp.

Walk into the kitchen and open the seed tin to look at the dried sea beet seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's carving into the wood while the seeds rot in the tin.
