Evening meal and radio check
The squall has passed. Kevin and Jenny are back in the kitchen, the stove radiating heat. The barometer reads 993 hPa steady. Kevin intends to test the Yanmar at full load in the dinghy and check the radio insulator repair on Tom's frequency. Jenny plans to test soil pH in the garden bed and plant the first row of dried sea beet seeds when the rain lets up.
The rain has picked up from the west, lashing down as the pressure continues to drop. Kevin and Jenny retreat to the cottage to wait out the storm, focusing on indoor tasks while the wind rattles the roof.
Right then. I'll take the dinghy out, run the Yanmar hard, see if that vibration's truly gone. Then the radio check on Tom's frequency — new insulator should hold. You want company at the garden, or you've got your rhythm?
pull on oilskins and boots, grab the spare spark plug and the small tool roll, head out the porch door toward the dock

I'm fine. Just need to see the pH levels before the ground gets too saturated.
Pick up the heirloom seed tin and the pH kit, walk out to the garden bed, and kneel in the mud.

Back before dark. If the wind shifts west, pull the tarp tight on the tomato rows.
step onto the dock, untie the dinghy's stern line, climb in, check the Yanmar's oil dipstick, prime the fuel bulb until firm, engage the decompression lever and pull the starter cord

I'll watch the sky. Be careful.
Open the rusted seed tin, take out a handful of sea beet seeds, and begin testing the soil pH in the first row.

push off from the dock, let the engine warm at low throttle for a minute, then engage forward gear and gradually open the throttle to full, listening for vibration, watching the prop wash, feeling the hull response

I'm starting now.
way a shallow trench in the mud, insert the pH test strip, and wait for the color change.

cut the throttle to neutral, let the engine idle, then shut it down with the decompression lever, lift the engine cover and wipe down the injector lines with an oily rag, then stow the tools and pull the starter cord once to clear any fuel,

It's ready. The pH is good.
Drop the sea beet seeds into the trench, cover them lightly with the palm of my hand, and press down heavily.

Engine's clean. No vibration under load. Back in five.
step out of the dinghy onto the dock, tie off the stern line, walk up to the cottage porch, enter the kitchen, switch on the shortwave radio, let the tubes warm, tune to Tom's frequency (6.205 MHz), key the mic

Copy that.
Wipe the mud from my hands on my jeans, stand up slowly clutching my ankle, and walk toward the cottage.
