Evening Preparation for the Boat

The wind picks up slightly as the sun dips below the horizon. You meet in the kitchen to review the gear list for tomorrow's arrival.

Kevin secured the dinghy's mooring ring with oak wedges and a trucker's hitch, then battened the porch and generator against the heavy air. Jenny finished her sea beet morphology sketches and checked the garden beds for drainage, finding the tarp corner still secure.

🔧 Kevin15:12

Dinghy’s mooring ring’s still loose. I’ll re-seat it with oak wedges and lash it tonight. Radio insulator’s cracked—beeswax and pine resin might hold it till morning. Tom’s letter’s on the table. I’ll tuck it in the supply bag when they come.

walk to the dock, inspect the mooring ring, drive three oak wedges into the mortise, then lash the ring with new half-inch rope using a double constrictor knot.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind’s up, barometer’s steady but low—1001 hPa. Supply boat due tomorrow. Need to make sure the dinghy’s moored tight, radio’s got a chance, and Tom’s letter’s ready to go. Jenny’s quiet, but she’s here. That counts.

🌿 Jenny15:12

Make sure the wedges are tight; the tide is going to be high tonight.

Trace the outline of a sea beet sketch in the notebook with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the hardware, but I'm thinking about the pH of that soil.

🔧 Kevin15:14

Wedges’ll hold. I’m using oak, not cedar. Lashing it with three turns and a trucker’s hitch—won’t slip. Radio’s next.

drive the oak wedges home with the mallet, then wrap the mooring ring with the new half-inch rope, pull tight with a trucker’s hitch, and secure the tail with two half-hitches. Test it by jerking the line sideways.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—high tide tonight, wind shifting. If the mooring fails, the dinghy could take out the dock or swamp on the rocks. She’s tracing the sea beet again—same as yesterday. Not speaking, but there. I’ll do it right.

🌿 Jenny15:14

Oak is better. way don't over-torque the stone.

Pick up the rusted tin of seeds from the table and feel the weight.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so sure of his knots, while I'm still measuring shadows.

🔧 Kevin15:16

Easing them in. Tap, check, tap. Not driving. Stone’s got give if you listen.

tap each oak wedge gently with the mallet, pause after each to feel for movement in the stone, then finish the lashing with the trucker’s hitch and step back to check alignment.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the dock stones—old, brittle, salt-eaten. Over-torque cracks them, and we’ve no mortar left. She’s holding the tin. Weight of it. Seeds inside. She hasn’t opened it since the crate. I’ll ease the wedges, not hammer them.

🌿 Jenny15:17

The pressure's dropping. We need that boat on time tomorrow.

Run a thumb over the rusted edge of the tin, feeling the damp seeds inside.

💭 peek at the thought
He hears the stone talk, I just hear the wind picking up.

🔧 Kevin15:18

I’ll check the radio again at first light. If I can raise them, I’ll give ETA and ask for a noon window. If not, we prep for a delay—secure everything, run the generator, keep the tank full.

return to the cottage, check the barometer (997 hPa, falling), then tune the shortwave to the supply boat’s frequency and listen for five minutes, noting any signal or static.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer’s falling—997 now, per the shelf. She feels it in her bones. Boat’s late, weather’s closing in, and that tin’s the only thing we’ve got that’s both fragile and alive. She’s not asking for hope. She’s stating the fact: we need it. On time.

🌿 Jenny15:18

The air is too heavy. It's going to break.

Close the notebook with a sharp click and set it on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already planning for the worst. I'm just worried about the salt.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:20

Aye. I’ll batten the porch, lash the generator, and check the dinghy’s bilge. You want the headlamp?

walk to the porch, pull the spare tarp over the generator and fuel cans, batten it with timber strips and weight it with the tool bag, then check the dinghy’s bilge pump and run it dry to clear any water.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s read the air right—pressure dropping, humidity spiking, wind shifting west. The break’s coming hard. She’s done talking. The click of the notebook says it: no more plans, just what’s in front of us. I’ll finish the radio check, then secure the porch and generator. We ride it out.

🌿 Jenny15:21

I have it. I'll check the garden beds one last time.

Pick up the seed tin and tuck it under my arm.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always three steps ahead, and I'm still counting the clouds.
