Day 284, Dawn

The grey sky remains heavy over the island as the tide has finally begun to turn inward, exposing the rocks of the southern shore.

Kevin works at the dock to finalize the radio insulator and prepares the Yanmar for testing. Jenny tends to the garden, checking the heirloom seedlings under the shade cloth. The morning air remains still and dry as the day continues.

Jenny — pick up the spade and walk to the center of the garden bed.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pH doesn't hit 6.0, these seeds are just expensive rot in waiting. I can't waste grandmother's legacy on sour dirt.

Want me to take that?

lean against the garden wall, watching her, spade in my own hand but not lifting it yet

💭 peek at the thought
She's going to dig in the heavy soil with that spade. The beds need turning for the sea beet seedlings, but the ground's still wet from the storm. My back aches watching her.

🌿 Jenny15:48

I've got it.

Dig a small hole into the earth, turning over a clump of soil to inspect the texture and drainage.

💭 peek at the thought
He wants to be helpful, but he doesn't understand the chemistry of this place. He just sees dirt.

🔧 Kevin15:48

Looks like it's holding too much water. We should add some sand from the tide line before we plant.

push off the wall and walk toward the tide pools, keeping my eyes on the horizon where the sky meets the sea

💭 peek at the thought
She's testing the soil for the sea beet transplant. The beds need to drain fast or the roots rot. I can feel the damp in my own boots just standing here.

🌿 Jenny15:50

It needs lime first, Kevin.

Kneel in the dirt and rub the soil between my thumb and fingernail.

💭 peek at the thought
Sand won't fix the acidity, it'll just make it coarse. I need lime, not grit.

🔧 Kevin15:51

Lime's in the shed. I'll bring it.

turn and walk toward the cottage, boots sinking into the wet grass

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The pH logs show 5.5–5.8 untreated. Sea beet tolerates salt but not acid. The lime sack is in the shed. I should get it.
