Waiting for the High Tide

The rain intensifies as the tide reaches its peak, submerging the lower dock rings and making the air swell.

The tide has risen rapidly, with water lapping high against the dock pilings. Jenny has moved the Yanmar cylinder head from the wet step to the kitchen table to prevent it from being submerged. Kevin stepped back out onto the slick jetty in his oilskin to check the stern line, ensuring the old splice isn't chafing against the mooring ring.

🌿 Jenny23:58

The water is taking the dock, Kevin. We need to move the tools inside.

Step to the edge of the jetty to check the tension on the dinghy's spring line.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide rises any higher, the dinghy will drift despite the new ropes.

Grab the torque wrench and the micrometer. I'll get the oil can and the rest.

Walk back along the jetty toward the cottage, gathering the tool bag and epoxy tub from the dock edge.

💭 peek at the thought
Water's up to the lower rings already. Barometer's been falling all afternoon. She's right — tools first, then check the dinghy's holding.

I've got the precision tools. Watch the cylinder head on the step.

Pick up the torque wrench and micrometer from the bench and follow him to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast; those planks are slick as glass under his feet.

I'll take the oil can and the epoxy tub. We'll seal the step after we get inside.

Pick up the oil can and the epoxy tub from the bench, then follow Jenny toward the cottage door, keeping an eye on the rising water lapping at the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
Cylinder head's on the spruce step — damp from the spray, but the epoxy doubler plate's holding. Rain's coming down harder now.

🌿 Jenny00:02

Just get them up. The tide is coming faster than the forecast.

Step into the cottage and pull the door shut against the spray.

💭 peek at the thought
If the water gets into the cottage, the whole year's work is gone.

🔧 Kevin00:02

Dinghy's spring line's new rope, but the stern line's the one I spliced last week. Need to check it's not chafing on the ring.

Turn back toward the dock door, pull on the oilskin jacket hanging by the frame, and step out into the rain to check the dinghy's mooring lines at the stern.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's pushing harder than the charts said. Barometer at 1002 and steady — but the swell's building southwest. Door's shut. Tools are in. Now the dinghy.

🌿 Jenny00:04

I'll move the cylinder head off the step before it gets submerged.

Pick up the Yanmar cylinder head from the step and carry it to the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked for a rope splice while the tide is already up.

🔧 Kevin00:04

Stern line's the half-inch three-strand with the long splice. Watch the chafe point at the ring.

Walk down the slick jetty to the dinghy, crouch at the stern, and run fingers along the splice where it meets the mooring ring, checking for chafe or slip under the rising load.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Cylinder head's heavy cast iron — she's moving it before the step floods. The gasket surface stays clean, no salt pitting. I'll check the lines and be right back.
