← Day 294

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the tide pools

The Midday Rain

Kevin is at the dock and Jenny is at the tide pools.

Kevin secures the dinghy's mooring lines as the high tide laps against the dock. Jenny heads to the tide pools to look for forage, noting the thickening clouds as the humidity sets in.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand over the engine, staring at the snapped cord. The rain is drumming hard against your shoulders.

🔧 Kevin01:32

Shite.

Crouch under the dinghy's partial shelter, pull the starter housing bolts with the socket set, inspect the recoil spring and sheave.

💭 peek at the thought
Cord's gone. Recoil spring might still be good. Can wind it by hand if I can get the housing off, but that's bolts and time in this rain. Or I can pull-start it with a rope wrapped round the flywheel — done it before on a dead ship in the Indian Ocean. Hands are cold though. Rain's not letting up.

🔧 Kevin01:36

Kevin — pick the salt out of the rope fibers with the knife tip, work a clean tail, splice it to the old remnant, thread through the sheave and tie a tight figure-eight. Wind the spring, test the catch.

💭 peek at the thought
Spring's intact. Sheave's not cracked. Just the cord rotted through at the knot. Got the offcut of three-strand from the crate — half-inch, salt-crusted but the core's sound if I work it loose. Can splice a new tail, thread it through the sheave, knot it proper. Ten minutes' work if my fingers don't seize.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the tide pools

You close your sketchbook, keeping the pages dry under your coat. The tide has now completely reclaimed the lower shelf.

🌿 Jenny01:31

Jenny — walk back toward the cottage, keeping a sharp eye on the waterline.

💭 peek at the thought
The water came in faster than I calculated. I need to get back before the path becomes a slurry.

🌿 Jenny01:34

Jenny — walk into the kitchen and check the pantry for something quick to eat.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is actually growling. I can't think straight about the pH levels if I'm lightheaded.
