Morning Sorting and Humidity

Jenny sits on the low garden wall spreading out heirloom seeds onto a dry cloth to inspect. Kevin stands nearby, checking the tension on the garden tarp while the heavy air hangs over the tomato rows.

The double tarping of the garden fails to hold against the shifting wind. Despite Kevin's efforts to weight the corners and overlap the seams, the heavy fabric catches the air, allowing salt spray and moisture to penetrate through the weave. The heirloom seeds in the tin remain vulnerable as the seal is not tight enough to keep the rising humidity out.

🌿 Jenny02:05

The wind is shifting. We need to area that corner down tighter.

Jenny picks up a single heirloom tomato seed, rolling it between thumb and forefinger while checking for cracks.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is too acidic, I can feel it in the way the weeds curl, but he only sees the tarp flapping.

On it. Got the spare batten and line by the shed.

Walk to the garden shed, retrieve the spare timber batten and length of rope, return to the south corner of the garden tarp, pull the corner tight and batten it down with timber strips and weighted tool bag.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the wind. Can feel it backing already — the tarp's south corner's been lifting on the gusts. She's gentle with that seed. Always is. Like it's something that might break if you breathe wrong.

🌿 Jenny02:07

It's not tight enough. The spray will get through the weave anyway.

Jenny carefully gathers the seeds back into the tin, snapping the lid shut with a sharp metallic click.

💭 peek at the thought
He's fixing the surface, but the salt is already getting into the roots.

Then we double it. Tarp over tarp. Overlap the seams.

Walk to the cottage porch, retrieve the spare heavy-duty tarp, unfold it over the existing garden tarp with seams overlapped, batten down the edges with timber strips and weight the corners with tool bags and stones.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the weave. Knows the salt spray finds every gap. The tin click sounds final — like she's putting something away for good.

🌿 Jenny02:09

If the moisture traps underneath, they'll just rot before they ever see the light.

Jenny kneels in the dirt, tracing the edge of the walled garden bed with a muddy finger.

💭 peek at the thought
Two layers. He's building a wall against the inevitable, but the soil is the real enemy.

🔧 Kevin02:10

Leave the windward edge loose. Lets the air move. Pin the leeward side.

Adjust the double tarping — release the windward (west) edge so air can flow underneath, secure the leeward (east) side tightly with battens and weights, check the tomato stakes aren't rubbing against the fabric.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the tarp. She's talking about the beds underneath. The tomato seedlings at true leaf, the peppers and lettuce already showing damping-off. She's seen the rot before. Knows what trapped heat and wet does to things trying to start.
