Night - The Fever Breaks

The smell of salt is heavy in the air as the first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof.

The heavy, humid night air hangs still over the cottage as the tide begins to rise. Kevin focuses on securing the food stores from the persistent rat while Jenny manages the drying of the heirloom seeds in the damp heat.

🌿 Jenny02:50

It's starting again.

Pull the blanket up over my legs and lean my head back against the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
The rhythm of the rain usually calms me, but tonight it just sounds like a countdown. I can feel the pulse in my ankle, timed to the drops on the roof.

Aye. West wind behind it.

pull on my boots and grab the storm lantern from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
Rain on the roof means the barometer was right. Need to check the dock lines before the tide peaks — west wind and rising water will test the mooring ring repair.

🌿 Jenny02:52

Don't go out there if you don't have to.

Watch him with a tired, heavy gaze, clutching the edge of the blanket.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already in motion, always fixing, always bracing. I'm just here, leaking and pulsing.

🔧 Kevin02:52

Just the lines. Back in ten.

check the barometer reading on the way out the door

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking me to stay. She's telling me what she sees — infection climbing her leg, barometer falling, me walking out into dark water. The dock ring held through the last blow. The oak wedges are set. The bronze sleeve is on the prop shaft. But the tide surge comes faster than forecast.

🌿 Jenny02:54

Be careful.

Watch the door click shut and listen to the wind start to howl against the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
Ten minutes or an hour, the island doesn't care about his schedule. I hope the tarp holds better than the last one.

move fast down the cottage path toward the dock, storm lantern swinging low to cut the rain and wind

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's 1002 and still falling. Wind's backing west, tide rising — exactly what the notebook warned about. Dock mooring ring is the weak point. If it parts, the dinghy could break loose and smash against the pilings.

🌿 Jenny02:56

Jenny — slowly slide off the bed, wincing as my weight hits my ankle, and limp toward the kitchen stove.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't just lie here and wait for the infection to climb. I need to eat something, or I'll crash.

🔧 Kevin02:56

(none)

reach the dock and crouch at the mooring ring, lantern light catching the steel doubler plate and four 150mm stainless through-bolts with washers and nyloc nuts

flagged: repeated_opener

💭 peek at the thought
Dock ring mortise is sound but the ring shifts under load; cedar shims have split and are ineffective; oak wedges and bronze sleeve are the next repair step. The oak wedges are in. The bronze bolt is set. Need to verify the sister knee and through-bolts are holding against this surge.
