← Day 298

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Afternoon Maintenance and Botany

Kevin is at the dock and Jenny is at the garden.

Kevin spent the afternoon at the dock fine-tuning the Yanmar engine and securing the mooring ring hardware. Jenny focused on the garden, tending to the heirloom seedlings and managing the drying process for the seeds.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand over the Yanmar, staring at the skewed housing. The sun is high and the air is heavy with salt.

🔧 Kevin05:24

Kevin — walk to the cottage workshop, retrieve the cylinder head gasket, honing stone, and micrometer. Return to the dock and set up at the Yanmar.

💭 peek at the thought
The housing's still off by a hair. Three bolts torqued, two stripped, one missing in the bilge — I know where it fell. The bronze sleeve held on the prop shaft, but the block's warped from the overheating last month. Need to pull it, face it flat, or find a way to shim it true. Tide's coming up. If I don't get this seated before the water covers the bilge, I'm chasing threads in the dark.

🔧 Kevin05:28

Kevin — kneel at the bilge, reach into the cold water, retrieve the missing housing bolt. Clean threads with wire brush and penetrating oil. Run tap through the stripped holes in the block.

💭 peek at the thought
The gasket's new, the stone's fine. But the housing face has a lip worn into it — three thousandths, maybe four, right where the bolt holes pull. Micrometer confirms it. No shim in the kit that thin. I could lap it flat on the stone, but that's an hour of figure-eights and I'm already shaking from the torque wrench. The missing bolt's in the bilge water, shiny clean. I saw it when I knelt. If I fish it out, clean the threads, and run a tap through the hole... still leaves the warp. The bronze sleeve on the prop shaft was the easy part. This is the one that matters.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You lean against the garden wall, favoring your bad ankle. The tomato seedlings are reaching for the shade cloth.

🌿 Jenny05:22

Jenny — squat down to peel back the sock and inspect the ankle for new red streaks up the calf.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing again. If I don't plant something today, these seeds will just rot in that rusted tin.

🌿 Jenny05:26

Just one. Just one seed.

Walk slowly to the cottage, retrieve the heirloom seed tin from the shelf, and bring it back to the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
The redness hasn't climbed, but it's still too hot. I can't just keep staring at the soil and waiting for a sign.
