Low Tide Pool Harvest

Kevin returns from the shore with a handful of limpets as Jenny finishes tending to the garden shade cloth.

Kevin and Jenny ate boiled limpets for breakfast. Jenny verified the heirloom seed tin remained dry, while Kevin prepared the meal.

🔧 Kevin05:00

Got a handful. Big ones. Boil ’em with the corned beef fat again?

walk up to the cottage porch, limpets cupped in both hands, and set them down beside the skillet on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets are still moving slightly in my palm—fresh from the pool. Jenny’s back is bent over the shade cloth, her hands slow but sure. I should’ve helped her stake it down this morning instead of chasing the tide.

Yeah. Scrub the shells first. The salt is thick on these.

wipe muddy hands on my own and stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts onto my left foot.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide, and he's already thinking about dinner.

Scrub first. Then the pot.

pick up the galvanized bucket from beside the porch steps, carry it to the spring, and rinse the limpets one by one under the cold flow, scraping barnacle dust off the shells with the back of my knife.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left again. The ankle's not right, no matter what she says. I should've checked the wrap last night instead of staring at the radio.

🌿 Jenny05:02

Don't use too much fat, I want to save some for the sea much.

walk to the kitchen table and pull the heirloom seed tin toward me, checking the seal for any dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so methodical with the chores, while I'm just counting the days between boats.

🔧 Kevin05:04

Won't use much. Just enough to keep the shells from sticking.

carry the bucket of scrubbed limpets back to the stove, set the skillet on the wood fire, and let it heat while I spoon a thin layer of rendered corned beef fat from the jar, tilting the pan so it coats the bottom and no more.

💭 peek at the thought
Sea beet. She means the sea beet. The tin's seal held through the storm—good. But she's saving fat for greens instead of protein. Means she's thinking long term. Or means the corned beef is running lower than I thought.

🌿 Jenny05:04

Thanks.

open the seed tin and carefully peer at the packets, checking for any new signs of mold or moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
He's listening. Or he's just avoiding looking at me. I can't tell anymore.

🔧 Kevin05:06

Tin's holding.

drop the limpets into the hot skillet, listening to the sharp hiss, and cover with the lid, letting them steam in their own brine and the thin fat, timing it by the rhythm of the wind in the stove pipe.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thorough. Always thorough with the seeds. The tin's dry inside—epoxy seal on the lid held. But her fingers tremble slightly on the packets. Could be the ankle. Could be something else.

🌿 Jenny05:06

It is. For now.

close the tin lid with a soft click and lean back against the table, shifting my weight to avoid the heat in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't even look at the tin and he knows. He's observing me as much as I'm observing the plants.
