← Day 30

the dock · day 30 · dawn

The silver run and rising tides

Warm rain falls steadily against the dock as a silver flash of fish moves through the shallow shallows beneath the pilings. Kevin works at the masthead with the old coax cable while the barometer holds steady at 999 hPa.

The morning rain continues in a warm, steady drizzle, making the dock wood slick slick. The tide is at its lowest, exposing the jagged rocks and tide pools near the shore. Kevin stands by the dock, his back stiff from yesterday's work, while Jenny works near the stove to manage the damp heirloom seeds.

The wood is still too thirsty today, Kevin. Don't force the connection.

Trace the curve of the way leaves in the notebook, noting the way the lead resists the damp paper.

💭 peek at the thought
If the humidity doesn't drop soon, that epoxy will never set and the whole mast step will be lost.

Cable's not wood, Jen. Connection's mechanical. Either seats or it doesn't.

finish seating the coax center pin at the masthead, tug-test the connection, then descend the mast rungs to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the wood, but the coax isn't wood. It's the connection at the masthead that's been loose for three days. My fingers are cold and the cable's slick, but the barometer's steady and the tide's low. This is the window.

Just watch the tension. The salt air eats the threads fast here.

Close the notebook to protect the sketches from the mist.

💭 peek at the thought
Everything is a binary switch to him, but the island is a slow rot and stubborn growth.

🔧 Kevin00:20

Threads are new. Connector's fresh. I'll torque it to spec and tape it.

apply proper torque to the coax connector with the spanner, wrap the joint with self-amalgamating tape, then climb down the mast to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Salt gets into everything. But the connector's fresh off the supply boat, threads clean. I've done this a hundred times on ships rolling worse than this mast sways.

way. Just make sure the seal is airtight before the tide turns.

Stand up and stretch the cramp in my calf, looking toward the water tank.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks torque can solve everything, but the moisture is already inside the fibers.

🔧 Kevin00:23

Sealed. Tape needs a minute to bind. Twenty minutes on the tide.

wait sixty seconds for the self-amalgamating tape to fuse, inspect the wrap, then descend the mast fully to the dock planks

💭 peek at the thought
Airtight. Right. The tape'll fuse proper in the heat of the signal, but the first seal has to hold. Tide's still low — got twenty minutes before it pushes back up the beach. Good enough.
