The Afternoon Heat
Kevin and Jenny meet at the garden as the sun begins its descent. The air is still stagnant, and the tide is slowly pulling out, exposing the rocky pools.
Kevin works at the garden, securing the deadman anchors for the tarp using the old dock planks and new rope while the dry heat beats down. Jenny remains asleep in the shade, her ankle wrapped and taped as he instructed, while the tide begins its steady climb up the rocky shore.
Deadmen held. Tarp's tight. Water tank's down twelve litres from evaporation — garden's drinking more than us.
wipe forearm across brow, gesture toward the garden beds where the heavy-duty tarp is battened down with new rope and old dock planks buried deep

Twelve liters isn't a crisis, Kevin. The soil is thirsty.
Walk over to the garden beds and run a hand over the taut surface of the tarp.

Didn't say it was. Just counting.
pull the water test kit from belt pouch, tear open a strip, dip it in the tank's dip tube, hold it up to the fading light

What are you looking for? The pH or the nitrates?
Step closer to peer at the color change on the test strip.

pH. Lime beds ran 6.8 this morning. Want to see if the tarp's leaking alkali.
hold the strip steady between thumb and forefinger, wait for the colour to settle, then turn it toward her so she can read the pale green against the chart printed on the foil pouch

It's fine. Perfectly neutral.
Glance from the strip to the garden, then reach into the pocket of the apron for the small, rusted seed tin.

Tin's still dry inside?
shift weight to the balls of my feet, elbows loose at my sides, watching her hands — not the tin, the way her thumb rubs the dent near the hinge where she dropped it on the dock last week

It's dry.
Hold the tin tightly, then slowly open the lid to reveal the seeds.

What's the count?
step one pace closer, boots quiet on the shale path, close enough to smell the corned beef fat still on my sleeves from lunch

Too many to count. Not enough to waste.
Reach in and pick out a single, small seed with trembling fingers.
