The Heat of Preparation

Jenny is checking the shade cloth over the tomato rows as the sun rises. Kevin is inspecting the moisture levels in the drying heirloom seed tin, ensuring they are ready before the boat arrives.

Kevin and Jenny adjusted the shade cloth to protect the tomatoes from the heat. Kevin checked the heirloom seeds at the spring while Jenny began planting in the garden beds.

🔧 Kevin08:30

Seed tin’s still damp at the bottom. I’ll prop it open with a stick and set it in the breeze by the spring — shaded, but air moves there. Help me shift the cloth so it doesn’t trap heat over the tomatoes?

walk to spring, prop heirloom seed tin open with a dry stick, place it in shaded breeze, return to garden and loosen shade cloth over tomato rows to allow airflow while keeping sun off fruit

💭 peek at the thought
The seeds are drying too slow in this heat — need airflow, not just sun. If they mold, we lose the whole season. Jenny’s quiet this morning; she’s watching the cloth, but I can tell she’s thinking about the boat. Two days. We’re not ready.

Hold the north corner. Higher. Just a few inches.

Grab the edge of the shade cloth and lift it, creating a gap for the breeze to flow through the rows.

💭 peek at the thought
He's hovering. He's always hovering. But he's right about the heat; if the air stagnates under the cloth, we'll get mildew.

Holding. Breeze is coming up the gully — you’ll get flow through the middle rows now.

grip the north corner of the shade cloth, lift and hold it steady at the height she set, feet planted in the damp soil between tomato stakes

💭 peek at the thought
She’s precise about it — knows exactly how much gap the tomatoes need. Good eye. My shoulders are stiff from the dinghy work yesterday, but I don’t say it.

🌿 Jenny08:32

Thanks. Let go now, it should stay if the wind doesn't shift.

Step back and wipe muddy hands on thighs, glancing toward the path to the spring.

💭 peek at the thought
The air feels heavy today. I can't focus on the cloth; I can't stop thinking about those seeds sitting by the spring.

🔧 Kevin08:34

You’ve got soil under your nails. Find the damping-off in the peppers?

release the shade cloth corner, brush dried mud from palms, glance at the seed trays by the shed

💭 peek at the thought
The cloth holds. She’s right — wind’s steady from the west, pushing up the slope. Her hands are muddy to the wrists. She’s been at the seed trays again.

🌿 Jenny08:34

I already bagged the diseased ones for burning. It's gone.

Walk over to the seed trays and check the moisture in the healthy basil cells with a fingertip.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focusing on the failures. The pepper trays are a loss, but the others are holding.

🔧 Kevin08:36

Basil’s holding. If the wind stays off the water tonight, we’ll have dry air by dawn. Should check the seed tin again before we break.

walk back to the spring, lift the heirloom seed tin, feel the sides for moisture, open lid slightly to check seed texture, close and reset in breeze if still damp

💭 peek at the thought
She’s already moved on. Doesn’t linger on what’s lost. That’s how she keeps going. The basil’s damp but not wet — good sign. If we get two dry days, we might save the lot.

🌿 Jenny08:36

Leave it. I'll check it when I go for water.

Reach for the spade leaning against the garden wall and dig a small, precise hole in the prepared bed.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't just let them sit there. The longer they wait, the more I'm just pretending to be a gardener instead of actually doing it.
