Evening Meal and Rest
Kevin and Jenny meet in the cottage. A small fire is going in the stove, and the scent of drying mint fills the room.
The heat is a physical weight over the cottage, the air still and dry at 31°C. The tide is slowly retreating, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools. Inside, the smell of drying herbs and salty sea beet lingers in the air as the pair prepares for the coming supply boat in two days.
Smells like a tea shop in here.
Lean against the kitchen table and exhale slowly, glancing toward the window to check the last of the light.

Figured if we can’t go to the mainland for tea, we’ll bring the shop to us.
Pour two chipped mugs from the pot on the stove, steam curling up, and slide one toward her without looking too hard at her ankle — still wrapped, still sore, but she’s not flinching when she moves.

Thanks.
Wrap both hands around the warm mug and take a slow, cautious sip, leaning back against the table.

Mint’s from the clump by the spring. Thought it might do more than just smell nice.
Reach into my pocket, pull out the small sprig I saved this morning — the one with the whitest leaves — and lay it gently on the table between our mugs, like an offering.
