Waiting for the Boat

The sun begins to dip, casting long shadows across the island as you prepare for the supply boat's arrival.

Kevin and Jenny spent the evening at the old shrine as the dry wind held steady. They finalized the tensioning of the garden deadman anchors and prepared their mental state for the supply boat's arrival the following day.

🔧 Kevin09:54

Kevin — walk to the dock, inspect the mooring ring for play, feel for shift under hand pressure, note any new movement since this morning.

💭 peek at the thought
The day’s work is done, but the mooring ring still worries me. I should check it one last time before dark, even if Jenny’s resting. If the ring fails under load tomorrow, we lose the boat’s cargo — and maybe the dinghy.

🌿 Jenny09:54

Leave it be, Kevin. It's not going anywhere.

Walk slowly toward the dock, leaning slightly on one leg to ease the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's obsessing over that ring again. It's solid enough for a supply boat, but he can't leave well enough alone. I'm too hungry to argue.

🔧 Kevin09:56

Just stretching my legs. Back in a minute.

reach the dock, grip the mooring ring with both hands, heave slow and steady to test for play, watch the mortise for movement, feel for the telltale shift at the aft edge.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the ring holding through the night. But I've felt that gap widen under load, and the boat's crane hits different than tide. I'll check it quiet-like, let her think I'm just walking off the day.

🌿 Jenny09:56

Jenny — stop a few paces behind him and watch the horizon, squinting against the low sun.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking for a failure that isn't there. Or maybe he's just looking for something he can actually fix.

🔧 Kevin09:58

Ring's got play. Aft edge. Wedges are failing in the rot.

crouch, run fingers along the mortise where the ring sits, probe the gap with a fingertip to gauge depth, mark the worst spot with a thumbnail scratch on the steel plate.

💭 peek at the thought
The ring moves. Maybe a sixteenth of an inch at the aft edge — enough to tell me the oak wedges are working loose in the rot. The doubler plate's holding the bolts, but the wood behind them is giving up. If the crane swings a heavy pallet, that ring comes out with a chunk of dock.

🌿 Jenny09:58

We'll deal with it after we eat. I'm starving, Kevin.

Shift weight off the bad ankle and gesture back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Of course it does. Everything on this island is slowly returning to the sea. I can't deal with a structural crisis on an empty stomach.

🔧 Kevin10:00

Alright. Food first. I'll eat quick.

turn from the dock, walk with Jenny toward the cottage, favor my left foot to match her limp, keep my eyes on the path to avoid tripping on roots.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — no fixing this in the dark, and we both need food. But I'll not sleep easy knowing that ring's one bad heave from failure. I'll eat quick, then see if I can rig something temporary before first light.

🌿 Jenny10:00

You don't have to walk like a wounded bird just because I am.

Let out a short, dry laugh and keep walking toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
That's a strange kind of sympathy, mimicking my limp. I wonder if he's actually worried or just trying to be "in sync" with me.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:02

Sorry. Old habit from the ships — match the watch's pace. I'll walk my own.

walk beside Jenny at my normal stride, keep my left shoulder near her right in case she needs balance, watch the ground ahead for loose stones or roots.

💭 peek at the thought
She saw through it. I don't need to limp for her — she knows me too well. I'll walk my own gait, but stay close enough to help if she stumbles. Pride's not worth a fall on this path.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny10:02

Just don't let the "watch" trip over a root.

Walk into the cottage and head straight for the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
"Match the watch's pace." He's still in sailor mode. I just want a tin of mackerel and a place to sit down.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:04

Kevin — follow Jenny into the cottage, hang my hat on the peg by the door, walk to the sink, wash my hands and face with seawater from the bucket, dry them on my trousers.

💭 peek at the thought
She's in the kitchen already — I'll follow, wash up quick, then see what's for supper. Limpets and sea beet again, unless she's managed something else from the garden. I'm starving, but I'll wait for her to sit first.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny10:04

I'm doing the mackerel. Do you want some of the sea beet too?

Reach for the tinned mackerel and the prepared sea beet leaves on the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so methodical. I can almost hear the mental checklist running in his head. I need to get some fuel in my system before I crash.
