Pre-Storm Squall

Kevin and Jenny stand under the porch overhang as the wind picks up from the north ridge. Kevin checks the final tension on the deadman anchors while Jenny secures down the loose tarp corners.

The steady rain continues, drumming against the garden tarp and saturating the soil. The water tank is nearing its capacity, sitting at 393 litres, leaving little room for further downpour. The tide is high, lapping at the lower reaches of the dock's pilings.

Anchors look solid, Kev. I'm going in.

walk to the cleared patch of the garden and pick up the spade.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is steady, but the wind is shifting. If I don't get those seeds in the ground now while the soil is workable, I'll just keep staring at the tin until they rot.

Holler if the soil fights back.

Turn toward the dock, check the mooring ring one more time before slack water.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving to the garden. The tarp's holding. Anchors are set. Let her work — she knows what she's doing.

🌿 Jenny10:18

I'll be fine. Just don't let the wind catch the porch door.

kneel in the damp earth and dig a shallow, precise trench for the first row of heirloom seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's worrying about the dock again. Good. But the soil isn't the part that fights back—it's the waiting.

🔧 Kevin10:20

Door's braced. Back before the tide fills.

Walk down the path to the dock, greenheart timber over shoulder, tool bag in hand.

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the seed tin. Good. The porch door's got the two-by-four brace and the battened tarp — it'll hold. Slack water's coming. Need to be at the dock with the greenheart sister beam before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny10:20

Jenny — reach for the seed tin on the shelf, carefully select the first packet of heirloom seeds, and press them into the damp soil with steady fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always moving, always fixing. I just need to start. One row. Just one.

🔧 Kevin10:22

Kevin — reach the dock, set the greenheart timber alongside the mooring ring mortise, kneel and probe the rot with the nail puller to find solid wood for the sister bolts.

💭 peek at the thought
She's planting. Finally. Eleven months of talking about this garden and she's the one putting seeds in the ground. Good. Right. Let her have it.

🌿 Jenny10:22

Jenny — gently brush the damp soil over the seeds and pat it firm with the palm of my hand.

💭 peek at the thought
I can hear him working over there, the clink of metal on wood. It's a grounding sound. Now, cover them before the rain washes the seed out of the furrow.

🔧 Kevin10:24

Kevin — pull the heavy wrench and drill from the tool bag, start clearing the corroded bolt holes for the sister beam, work fast while the tide holds.

💭 peek at the thought
Mortise is worse than I thought. Rot goes back past the doubler plate. The ring's only holding by the through-bolts now. Need longer reach — sister beam has to bite into sound timber further back, and I'll need to epoxy the bolt holes before driving the new fasteners. Slack water gives me maybe forty minutes.
