Evening Tea

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table as the sun dips low. The tide is high against the dock pilings.

Jenny prepared a meal of boiled limpets and sea beet while meticulously drying the heirloom seed packets. Kevin attempted to troubleshoot the Yanmar engine's vibration but failed to isolate the source at high RPMs.

🔧 Kevin10:54

Vibration's still there past half throttle. Runs clean at idle and low.

pour tea from the pot into two mugs, set one in front of Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
The vibration's still there at high RPM. Prop shaft's true, sleeve is good, mounts are solid. That leaves the bracket alignment or something internal I'm not catching. Should run it under load on the water, not just at the dock.

🌿 Jenny10:54

Thanks. Is it a shim problem or the shaft?

Take a sip of the tea and lean back in the chair, rubbing her temples.

💭 peek at the thought
He's obsessing over the engine again. I can't even think about the Yanmar right now; my stomach is cramping and the garden is still half-weeds.

🔧 Kevin10:56

Shaft's true. Sleeve pressed on, nut torqued to 35. Spins free by hand. Bracket's the suspect — reinforced but still sitting crooked. Mount face needs truing.

set my mug down, wrap both hands around it, steam rising

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking because she knows I've already checked the shaft. It's not the shaft. Bracket's slightly off — reinforced with through-bolts but still skewed. Could shim it, but that's masking. Might need to pull the engine and true the mount face proper.

🌿 Jenny10:56

If the face is crooked, you're just fighting the metal. You'll wear the bearings out in a month.

Push the tea mug away slightly and glance toward the stove, thinking of the limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
Always the hardware. He wants a world where everything is bolted and torqued into submission. I just want to eat something that isn't a tin of mackerel.

🔧 Kevin10:58

Aye. Lap the mounts flat by hand. Surface plate in the workshop, emery in the stores. Three, four hours if I'm careful.

pick up the mug again, blow across the surface, take a sip

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Fighting a bent face with shims just moves the load to the bearings. Need to pull the block, face the mounts flat on the mill — don't have a mill. Could lap them by hand with a surface plate and emery cloth. Slow. Tedious. Right.

🌿 Jenny10:59

way don't take all night. The boat comes in ten days.

Reach for the heirloom seed tin on the table, tracing the rusted edge with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
Four hours of lapping metal while the garden rots around us. I'm so tired my hands feel like lead.

🔧 Kevin11:00

Ten days is plenty. I'll start after supper. Cool metal laps better anyway.

set the mug down, stand up from the chair, walk to the workshop door and push it open

💭 peek at the thought
Ten days. Supply boat window. If I don't fix this before then, the vibration could shake something loose underway — fuel line, injector, mount bolt. Not worth the risk. Lap it tonight. Start after dark when it's cool.

🌿 Jenny11:00

I'm making the limpets!

Stand up and walk to the wood stove to check the pot of boiling limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already gone. Into his world of emery and surface plates. I can't do this on an empty stomach.
