The Rising Tide

The rain intensifies as the wind picks up. The tide reaches its peak, bringing spray over the seaward garden wall.

Kevin waited for slack tide at the dock and began sistering the mooring ring with greenheart beam and stainless bolts. Jenny tested the garden soil pH, planted the first row of heirloom seeds, and inspected the dock ring for rot from the garden side. Both worked independently on their stated tasks.

Wall's holding for now. But if the backfill goes, we lose the beds.

walk to the seaward garden wall to inspect the mortar joints and backfill at high tide

💭 peek at the thought
The seaward wall's taking the brunt. If the mortar's weeping at the base, the backfill's saturated. Need to check the deadman anchors on the garden side before the next surge.

🌿 Jenny10:26

The wall isn't the problem, Kevin. It's the spray. If that salt hits the beds, the pH won't matter—they'll just shrivel.

Walk quickly to the garden beds and pull the heavy-duty tarp tighter over the soil.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt spray is a death sentence for those seedlings. He's worried about the wall, but I'm worried about the chemistry of the soil.

🔧 Kevin10:26

I'll run a line along the windward edge and weight it with the oarlock bracket. Keep the spray off the soil.

walk to the windward edge of the garden tarp and secure it with a line tied to the oarlock bracket, then weight the tarp down with loose stones from the wall base

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The tarp's already staked, but if it's flapping at the windward edge, salt spray gets in. Need to weight it down along the seaward side before the beds scorch.

🌿 Jenny10:28

Thanks. Just make sure you don't pull it so tight it rips the eyelets.

Kneel by the edge of the cleared patch and check the soil moisture with a finger.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually thinking ahead for once. Now I just need to make sure the drainage isn't pooling under the plastic.

🔧 Kevin10:28

Won't touch the eyelets. Line runs parallel, stones on the skirt.

run a length of the new half-inch rope along the windward edge of the tarp, looping it around the oarlock bracket at one end and a driven stake at the other, leaving slack at the grommets, then place flat stones along the tarp's lower edge

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the tarp better than I do — been the one checking it daily. I'll leave slack at the eyelets and use the stones to hold the belly down. Soil's already dark; if the tarp holds, we keep the salt off and the moisture in.

🌿 Jenny10:30

It looks solid. I'm going back to the house for a minute. I can't think straight on an empty stomach.

Stand up slowly and walk back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being precise. I can't stand this feeling of being empty and weak—I need to eat something, or I'm going to shake.

🔧 Kevin10:30

I'll be back when the tide slacks. Got to sister the mooring ring before the next chop.

walk to the dock with the greenheart sister beam, mallet, and longer stainless through-bolts to prepare for the slack water repair

💭 peek at the thought
She's heading in to eat. I should too — but first, slack water's coming. The mooring ring won't wait. I'll take the greenheart aft and sister the piling while the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny10:32

Be careful with the mallet. Don't smash the bolt heads.

Enter the cottage and go straight to the stove to heat up some tinned mackerel.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. He's focusing on the dock. Now I can actually eat without feeling like I'm being watched or judged for my hunger.

🔧 Kevin10:32

Wrench for the bolts. Mallet's just for the plate.

arrive at the dock and wait at the aft mooring ring for the tide to slack, checking the greenheart beam fit against the piling

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The bolt heads are stainless but the threads are cut clean — one slip with the mallet and I'm re-tapping holes in a rising tide. I'll use the heavy wrench for the final torque, mallet only to seat the doubler plate.

🌿 Jenny10:34

Jenny — open a tin of mackerel and slide it into the cast iron skillet over the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the hardware. I can't even hear him anymore over the sound of my own stomach.
