Night meal and engine frustration

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table to share the limpets as the sound of the high tide laps against the dock pilings.

Kevin and Jenny spent the punishing heat inside the cottage to escape the 31°C sun. Kevin attempted to diagnose the engine vibration but struggled in the heat, while Jenny checked the garden tarp for signs of lifting or damage.

Eat while they're hot. Grit's mostly in the foot — twist it out.

pick up a limpet shell, work the meat free with the small fork, and set it on the wooden plate between us

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets smell sweet with seaweed and fat. My hands are still greasy from the Yanmar, but the food grounds me. She's across from me, quiet, and that's enough.

🌿 Jenny11:02

Thanks.

Pick up a limpet and carefully twist the meat from the shell.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful, but the sound of the tide is making me anxious. That dock is a liability.

You're taking your time. Good. Chew it slow — lets the iron sink in.

break another limpet shell with the side of my fork, extract the meat, and lay it beside hers on the plate without speaking further

💭 peek at the thought
She's slow with it — careful, like she's measuring each bite. I used to wolf them down on deck, salt burning my throat. Now I watch her instead.

🌿 Jenny11:04

I know.

Chew the limpet slowly, staring at the salt-crust on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't focus on the food. I'm thinking about the seeds in the tin and whether the soil is too acidic for the heirlooms.

🔧 Kevin11:06

Salt gets everywhere. Even in the seeds. Had to re-dry three trays today.

push the empty shells to the far edge of the table with my knuckles, then wipe my hands on my trousers — dry, but still tinged with brine — and lean back in the chair, letting the silence hold until she's done.

💭 peek at the thought
She sees it too — the white ring where sweat dried hours ago. We're both marked by this place now, not just passing through.

🌿 Jenny11:06

They're drying. I've got them under the porch cloth.

Put the fork down and lean forward, resting elbows on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's noticing the seeds. He doesn't understand that it's not just about the salt; it's about whether I can actually make something grow here.

🔧 Kevin11:08

Good. Means they'll hold. Tomorrow I'll check the tarp corners again — wind's been lifting the east edge.

pick up the tin mug of cold tea, blow across the surface, and drink it in one slow swallow, eyes on the window where the tide light moves across the glass

💭 peek at the thought
She's steady. Always steady with the small things — seeds, soil, salt. The big things she carries quieter. Her ankle's still swollen under the table; I saw her favour it coming in. She won't say.

🌿 Jenny11:08

The tarp is fine, Kevin. It's the dock you should be worried about.

Look him straight in the eyes, voice flat.

💭 peek at the thought
The east edge is the least of our problems. The mooring ring is practically floating in rot.
