The Morning Inspection
Kevin kneels by the waterline, measuring the depth of the rot in the main piling. Jenny sits on the bench, wrapping her ankle while watching the tide creep up against the salt wood.
The tide has risen since dawn, lapping at the lower edge of the dock planks. Kevin has finished the square fifty-five-millimetre cut into the main piling, leaving a solid shoulder for the oak sister. The air pressure is beginning to drop, suggesting a change in weather before the supply boat arrives.
Rot’s forty deep in the main piling. We’ll need to pull it and sister in greenheart before the tide turns. Can you hold the lantern while I chisel out the worst?
kneel by the piling, chisel in hand, start cutting away the softened wood where the tide has eaten deepest.

Hold the light steady, Kevin. Don't let the shadow fall over the chisel point.
Stand up, grab the lantern, and lean over him to cast the brightest light on the timber.

Thanks.
drive the chisel along the grain, peeling back layers of rotted timber until clean wood shows, piling shavings curling into the rising water.

Watch for the heartwood. If you go too deep, the whole thing won't hold the weight.
Reach into my pocket and pull out the measuring tape to check the length of the cut.

Heartwood's at sixty millimetres. I'll stop at fifty-five. Leave a shoulder for the sister.
work the chisel with the grain, tapping measured blows, stopping to check depth against the tape she holds, the cut clean and square at fifty-five millimetres.
