Dinner in the storm

The rain drums steadily on the roof as the smell of sizzling mackerel fills the small kitchen. You sit together at the table, watching the barometer continue to drop.

The air is heavy and still, smelling of salt and impending rain. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing slick rocks and the lower base of the dock's pilings. Inside the cottage, the barometer continues its slow drop to 1033 hPa, signaling that the overcast sky will soon break into a squall.

🌿 Jenny23:49

It's going to be a mess.

Push a piece of mackerel around the plate and stare at the needle on the barometer.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If the storm breaks through, those new seeds will be washed before they even take.

Boat's not coming Tuesday.

pick up the mackerel with my fork and eat it, watching the needle settle at 1033

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Below 1020 by morning means the north channel's going to be a washing machine. The supply boat won't risk it if it's under 990 at their departure window.

🌿 Jenny23:51

Then we better start rationing the tins.

Set my fork down and listen to the rain lashing the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
Eight days is now ten. If he misses Tuesday, we're down to salt and fuel.

🔧 Kevin23:53

We've got flour. Rice. The potatoes in the crate if the rot hasn't taken them all.

scrape the last of the mackerel oil onto my bread and wipe the plate clean

💭 peek at the thought
She's already doing the math. Forty tins between us, maybe fifty if I count what's in the crate. At two a day that's three weeks. The boat's been late before. Fourteen days last winter. She knows this.

🌿 Jenny23:53

I'll check the crate tomorrow morning.

Lean back in the chair and watch the shadows dance from the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
If the potatoes are mush, I'm eating limpets and hope for a month.

🔧 Kevin23:55

I'll run the engine at dawn. Warm the oil so it drains proper.

stand, carry my plate to the sink, run cold water over it

💭 peek at the thought
She'll go at first light. Low tide's 0540. The crate's on the dock — she'll want to see what the surge didn't take. I should check the Yanmar's oil before she asks me to take her out in the dinghy.

🌿 Jenny23:55

Make sure you check the filter too.

Close my tired eyes and listen to the wind through the cracks.

💭 peek at the thought
If the engine won't turn, I'm stuck here with the weeds.

🔧 Kevin23:57

Filter's clean. Changed it with the oil last month.

dry my hands on the towel, pull the notebook from the shelf, flip to the engine log page

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking. She's telling. The filter's been clean the last three changes but she doesn't know that — I didn't write it down. She's thinking of the vibration, the way the dinghy shudders at cruising RPM. She wants it gone.
