A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin and Jenny shared tea at the kitchen table while Jenny carefully worked the rusted lid of her grandmother's seed tin. The tin remained sealed but Jenny kept it close, determined to check the seeds herself before the supply boat arrives.

🌿 Jenny01:47

(A long, quiet sigh)

Sit at the kitchen table, pull the rusted seed tin toward me, and trace the rim of the lid with a shaky thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is cramping again. I haven't eaten since the limpets yesterday and the salt in the air is making my throat parched.

🔧 Kevin01:47

Kevin — cross to the stove, lift the kettle, feel the weight — still hot from this morning

💭 peek at the thought
She's shaking. Not cold. Something else.

🌿 Jenny01:49

Jenny — look down at my notebook, opening to the sketch of the sea much, and start shading the salt enough until the paper feels thin.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't even look at me. Just the kettle and the stove and the sound of the water moving.

🔧 Kevin01:50

Water's hot. Tea?

set a chipped mug on the table near her elbow, not touching the notebook, steam rising

💭 peek at the thought
She's pressing hard. Paper'll tear. She doesn't notice.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:51

Thanks.

Take the warm mug with both hands, letting the heat sink into my tired palms without looking up from the sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be nice, but the silence between us is still a physical weight.

🔧 Kevin01:51

The tin's still sealed. Whatever's inside didn't drown.

pull out the chair opposite, sit slow, forearms on the table, wait

💭 peek at the thought
She won't say it. I'll have to.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:53

I hope so.

Take a slow sip of the hot water, finally looking up to meet his eyes for a second before glancing away.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about the seeds, but he's really talking about everything I'm afraid to lose.

🔧 Kevin01:53

Lid's rusted tight. Could force it. Could wait for the supply boat — they've got better tools.

reach across, thumb the catch, test the give of it — metal groans, doesn't release

💭 peek at the thought
That glance. She's waiting for me to open it. Or waiting for me to say why I haven't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:55

No, don't wait.

Place my hand over his, stopping him from forcing the lid, and pull the tin closer to my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
If we wait six days, the damp will have finished them. I can't lose these now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:55

Kevin — let my hand stay under hers, palm up, the tin between us, don't pull away

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand's cold. Fingers tight on mine. She's not stopping me because of the tin.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:57

I need to see if they are viable.

Trace the rusted seam of the tin with my fingernail, feeling the salt-crusted metal.

💭 peek at the thought
He's letting me win this one. My stomach is still growling.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:57

They're yours. Always were.

slide the tin fully into her lap, lean back, watch her thumbs work the seam, quiet as tide pulling back

💭 peek at the thought
She thinks I'm keeping them locked away. Like I'm hoarding hope.
