Night at the cottage

The generator has been shut off for the night. The cottage is lit by the storm lantern on the table. Kevin and Jenny sit at the table with the rusted seed tin between them, the lid finally loosened. Outside, the tide is turning to ebb, and the air is still and heavy.

The rain continues to lash the west, a rhythmic drumming against the roof of the keeper's cottage. Inside, the air is humid and smells of damp earth and drying herbs. Kevin and Jenny have spent the final hours of the night preparing for the morning tide, their movements quiet in the glow of the lantern.

Look at how small they are.

Jenny reaches into the tin and picks up a single heirloom seed, holding it between her thumb and forefinger to the lantern light.

💭 peek at the thought
They're damp, but they're still alive. If I plant them now, will the soil hold?

Grandmother's beans. She said they'd grow in sand if you sang to them.

reach for my mug of tea, blow steam off the top

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at the future in her fingers. I'm looking at the scar on her knuckle from the winch handle last winter. Both of us still here.

Singing might be harder than fixing the Yanmar, Kevin." "Singing might be harder than fixing the Yanmar.

I set the single bean seed back in the tin and close the lid, then reach for my mug with a small smile. The steam rises from the tea, carrying the scent of lavender from the tin. </think>THOUGHT: He's trying to be comforting, but that story

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to sound hopeful, but I can hear the doubt in his voice. Like he's not even sure he remembers that story right.

I can hold the shim steady while you drive it. Tomorrow, on the ebb.

set my mug down, stand, and walk to the porch door to check the barometer before bed

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be comforting, but that story about singing to beans was her mother's, not mine. I don't know the tune. I know the torque on a housing bolt.

🌿 Jenny02:03

Tomorrow. If the rain holds off.

I trace the rim of the seed tin with my thumb, feeling the weight of the years inside the metal.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking for a mechanical fix, a way to hold the world still. But soil doesn't work that way.

🔧 Kevin02:05

Rain doesn't matter. Tide's what counts. Ebb at 0540. I'll be on the dock at 0500.

pause at the door, hand on the frame, looking out at the dark water where the dinghy rides

💭 peek at the thought
The rain won't hold off. Barometer's been falling all day. But the tide waits for no one, and the north piling won't hold another storm without that shim.

🌿 Jenny02:05

I'll have the shovel ready by then.

I click the tin shut, the metal sound echoing in the small kitchen, and look out at the rain lashing the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the tide, but the tide doesn't care if a seed sprouts or rots.

🔧 Kevin02:06

Then I'll have the shim in my pocket. And the letter sealed.

step out onto the porch, close the door softly, and stand in the rain, letting it hit my face until the lantern light goes dark behind me

💭 peek at the thought
She's already thinking past the shim. To the garden. To the beans. To something green breaking through.
