← Day 319

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

Midday Work and Hunger

Kevin is at the dock; Jenny is at the north cliffs

Kevin stands at the dock, the heavy humidity clinging to the skin as the barometer continues to drop. The tide is out, exposing the slick, barnacle-covered pilings of the dock. Jenny is on the north cliffs, checking the tension on the radio lines as she prepares for the coming shift in weather.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You are at the dock, the tide still falling, exposing the pilings. You have driven one oak shim home and hold another, ready to drive it under the toe of the north piling.

🔧 Kevin02:27

Kevin — drive the second oak shim into the north piling mortise opposite the first, seating it firm with the mallet.

💭 peek at the thought
The piling toe's sound. Salt stain on the surface but the greenheart's still dense. Second shim'll lock it proper if I get the angle right — drive it opposite the first, wedge the mortise tight both ways.

🔧 Kevin02:31

Kevin — crouch and inspect the seaward face of the north piling where the tide has exposed the scour.

💭 peek at the thought
Two shims home. Mortise is tight now — ring doesn't shift when I lean on it. Tide's dropped another foot, showing the scour hole under the cap. Deeper than I thought. Might need a third shim on the seaward side if the current's been eating that flank.

🔧 Kevin02:35

Kevin — stand and watch the water recede, timing the next half hour against the falling tide.

💭 peek at the thought
Scour's eaten back eighteen inches under the seaward face. Water's still high enough to hide the bottom of it. Current's been funneled between the pilings — explains why this one's the worst. Need to see the bottom before I decide on shims or sister plank. Tide's still falling. Wait for it.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You are on the north cliffs, notebook in hand, having left the garden to find better light for sketching. The sea beet specimens rest on a flat stone beside you, and the wind carries salt spray from below.

🌿 Jenny02:29

way still, you stubborn thing.

Sharpens her pencil and begins a detailed cross-section of the sea much's succulent leaf in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The leaves are so thick, holding water like little green reservoirs. If I don't get the angle of the's right, the whole study is a lie.

🌿 Jenny02:33

Jenny — closes the notebook and wipes a smudge of graphite off the page.

💭 peek at the thought
My hand is cramping and the light is shifting. I need to capture the way the salt curls before the grey comes down completely.

🌿 Jenny02:37

Time to go.

Packs the pencil into the notebook strap and tucks the book under her arm.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping and I can feel the pressure in my joints. Time to get back down before the wind picks up.
