The Gathering Clouds

The wind picks up, carrying the scent of salt and the coming rain. The tide is further out now.

The tide is fully out, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the sandbar toward the reef. The trade wind is steady, carrying the 30°C humid heat across the garden while the barometer continues to drop, signaling an approaching front.

🌿 Jenny04:19

The wind is turning. Check the tarp stakes again.

Press the heirloom seed into the soil, cover it lightly, and wipe the grit from my trembling hands.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide, and if this seed doesn't take, I'm just burying hope in the dirt.

Southwest corner's moving. I'll reset it now.

Walk to the southwest corner of the garden tarp, pull the stake free, drive it deeper at a steeper angle, and tamp the soil firm with the heel of my boot. Check the guy-line tension.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing southeast. Barometer still falling. Tarp's southeast stake held but southwest's working loose — saw it flex on the last gust. Need to drive it deeper before the rain hits and the ground turns to soup.

🌿 Jenny04:21

Make sure it's tight. The salt air is eating everything today.

Stand up slowly, wincing as my ankle flares, and watch him work the line.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind catches that flap, the whole bed will be gone before they even sprout.

🔧 Kevin04:21

Line's taut. Stake's holding in the clay underneath. Won't pull unless the whole bank goes.

Give the guy-line a final hard tug to test, then turn back toward the cottage. Pause at the garden gate. Glance at her ankle, then the barometer on the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle bad. Infection's not clearing. Antibiotics are down to two doses. If the boat doesn't make it in three days...

🌿 Jenny04:23

I'm fine. Just need to get the tin inside before the rain starts.

Rub the dirt from my knees and head for the cottage, clutching the seed tin to my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the ankle again. Always measuring the damage instead of the work.

🔧 Kevin04:23

Tin's safer on the porch shelf than in your pockets. I'll bring it.

Follow her to the cottage porch. Take the seed tin from her hands and set it on the shelf under the overhang. Rest a hand on her shoulder, brief and heavy.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not fine. The swell in that ankle's hot to touch even from here. Two antibiotic doses left. Boat's due in three days but the barometer says the crossing'll be ugly. If the supply boat turns back...

🌿 Jenny04:25

Leave it there. I'm going to check the radio.

Step inside the cottage, closing the door against the wind, and sit at the table staring at the seed tin through the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
way hand is too heavy. It feels like he's checking how much of me is left.
