Evening Preparation for the Gale

The wind begins to shift and the air pressure drops more rapidly as the light fades over the island.

Kevin secured the garden tarp's southwest corner and reinforced the dinghy's stern spring with fresh sail twine serving, while Jenny planted the first heirloom seed from the grandmother's tin into the prepared garden bed. Kevin verified the greenheart shim and doubler plate on the seaward piling were solid, though the piling itself moves on the surge with rot advancing upward. The dock mooring ring held fast with its oak wedges.

Pressure's falling hard. Southwest shift. We've got an hour of light to finish the tarp and check the dinghy lines.

walk to the garden's southwest corner, pull the loose tarp edge tight, drive a second stake deep at an angle, loop the guy rope around it and cinch with a trucker's hitch

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing southwest, pressure dropping faster than the barometer showed at noon. Gale warning wasn't wrong — just early. Need the tarp corners battened before dark and the dinghy's second spring line checked. Jenny's still at the garden bed; her ankle won't like the damp cold coming.

🌿 Jenny04:27

I'll finish the bed. Just watch the dock.

Jenny wipes grit from her trembling hands, opens the rusted tin, and carefully presses a single heirloom seed into the dark, damp soil.

💭 peek at the thought
He always rushes. My ankle is throbbing in time with the wind. If I don't get this seed in before the rain, the salt will ruin it anyway.

🔧 Kevin04:27

Dock first. Then the dinghy. You get the seeds in.

walk down the garden path toward the dock, lantern light swinging, boots heavy on the boards, stop at the seaward piling to check the greenheart shim seating and the four 150mm through-bolts on the doubler plate

💭 peek at the thought
Her hands are shaking worse than this morning. The ankle, the cold, the silence between us — she's pushing through all of it. Dock's holding but the seaward piling groans on the big sets. Greenheart shim's solid, but the rot runs deeper. Need to check the mooring ring's doubler plate bolts while there's still light to see the washers.

🌿 Jenny04:29

I'm already doing it.

Jenny kneels in the weeds, ignoring the sharp spike in her ankle, and uses her finger to make a small indentation in the prepared bed.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already gone. Always the structure, always the metal. The soil is so cold despite the heat, I hope it can take it.

🔧 Kevin04:29

Shim's solid. Doubler's tight. Piling's moving on the surge though — rot's coming up. Dinghy's stern spring needs fresh serving at the fairlead. Doing it now.

walk the dock boards to the dinghy moored at the seaward cleats, crouch at the stern spring fairlead, pull the worn chafe guard off, wrap the half-inch line with sail twine in tight spiral turns, knot it hard

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn as the engine bolts that won't turn. She'll work until she drops. The shim's seated clean — no daylight under the kerf, copper nails holding. Doubler plate bolts are snug, nylocs still torqued. But the piling itself moves a hair on the heavy surge, the rot eating upward from the mudline. Can't fix that tonight. Dinghy's stern spring took chafe last blow; the new half-inch three-strand should hold but the chafe guard's worn through at the fairlead. Need to re-serve it before the gale hits proper.

🌿 Jenny04:31

Focus on the ring.

Jenny takes a single seed from the grandmother's tin and presses it into the earth, covering it carefully with a trembling hand.

💭 peek at the thought
He's busy fixing the world while I'm trying to grow it. My hands won't stop shaking long enough to hold the tin. The air feels like a wet shroud.

🔧 Kevin04:31

Ring's sound. Stern spring served. Checking the north tarp stake and generator lashings, then radio.

walk back up the dock boards toward the garden, lantern beam cutting the gloom, check the north corner tarp stake, pull it tight, drive it deeper, cinch the guy rope

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the mooring ring. She's talking about the letter in my pack. The one for Tom. Three lines, folded sharp. She read it. Said "Post it." Hasn't said my name in weeks. The ring's sound — four 150mm bolts through the doubler plate, oak wedges driven vertical grain, bronze bolt in the mortise. It'll outlast the piling. But the chafe guard's served now, twine bitten deep into the half-inch. Dinghy's secure as I can make her. Light's going fast. Need to check the garden tarp's north corner — last stake was loose this morning — and the generator lashings. Then the radio schedule. Gale warning said 48 hours. Feels like twelve.

🌿 Jenny04:33

The tide is coming in.

Jenny sits back on her heels, watching the dark patch where she just planted, feeling the salt air bite at her skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already moved to the next thing. I'm still here in the dirt. My ankle is screaming, but the seed is finally in the ground. Maybe it stays.
