The Pre-Squall Calm

The wind picks up slightly from the east, and the first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated roof.

The humidity is heavy, clinging to the skin as the clouds thicken over the flat sky. The low tide has retreated, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the base of the dock pilings. The barometer continues its slow drop, signaling a shift in the weather before the supply boat arrives.

🌿 Jenny05:13

Kevin! Get the heavy stakes for the garden, now!

Run to the shed to grab the mallet and the extra twine.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping faster than I thought; if that tarp isn't pinned down, the seedlings are gone.

🔧 Kevin05:13

On it.

Run to the garden shed, grab the four heavy stakes and the coil of heavy weather line, then head straight for the garden beds.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's moving faster than the barometer said. East wind backing — that's the bad quadrant. She's right about the stakes.

🌿 Jenny05:15

Watch the north corner! It's already lifting!

Sprint to the garden and throw my weight onto the tarp to hold it.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is turning the color of a bruised plum; I need that tarp down before the wind catches the edge.

🔧 Kevin05:15

Got it. Driving stakes now.

Sprint to the north corner of the garden, drive the first heavy stake through the tarp grommet and into the soil with the mallet, then move to the second grommet and drive the second stake.

💭 peek at the thought
North corner's the fetch side. If that lifts, the whole tarp sails. She's holding it with body weight — not enough for what's coming.

🌿 Jenny05:17

Tie the south side to the wall! Use the heavy line!

Loop the twine through the grommets and pull it taut against the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's holding the corner, but the wind is gaining speed—I need to secure the rest.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:17

Doing it.

Run the heavy weather line from the north corner grommets to the cottage wall brackets, pull it drum-tight, and secure with a trucker's hitch; then do the same for the east side grommets.

💭 peek at the thought
South side's the lee but the wind'll back west by nightfall. Heavy line to the wall's good — stone won't move. Need to get the north side lashed before the gusts hit thirty.

🌿 Jenny05:19

The way! It's dropping!

Run back to the porch and check the dial on the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
The tarp is holding for now, but the wind is screaming through the gaps. I need to check the barometer before it really breaks.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:19

How far?

Keep tension on the east side line while glancing at the porch barometer through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
She means the barometer. Dropping fast now — that's the signal. Gale's closer than twelve hours. Every line, every stake, every loose thing on this island needs to be done in the next hour.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:21

1028 and dropping fast. We need to get inside.

Point to the reading on the barometer and then toward the kitchen door.

💭 peek at the thought
1028 hPa and still falling. It's going to be a mess.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:21

Right behind you.

Jog to the porch, grab the door, hold it for her, then step inside and latch it against the rising wind.

💭 peek at the thought
1028 and falling hard. That's twelve millibars since noon. Force 8'll be on us inside six hours, maybe less. Garden's lashed. Dock lines need checking. Dinghy's on the mooring — if the ring holds. She's right. Get in, secure the rest, wait.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:23

Close the door. The storm is coming early.

Sit at the kitchen table and lift my ankle onto the chair.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping so fast I can feel it in my ears. My ankle is throbbing again.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:23

Door's shut. Let me see the ankle.

Pull the other chair over, sit, and gently unwrap the bandage to check the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
Door's latched. Wind's howling round the corners already. She's favouring the ankle bad — red tracking up past the calf now. Antibiotics won't do much if it's gone septic. Need to look at it properly when the light holds.
