← Day 322

Apart — Kevin at the keeper's cottage, Jenny at the garden

Midday at the cottage and garden

Kevin is at the cottage checking the Yanmar and dock ring; Jenny is at the garden sketching sea beet morphology near the ridge.

The clouds are thickening as the pressure continues to drop, signaling a potential late-afternoon squall. The tide is receding, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the base of the dock pilings. Kevin and Jenny use the midday lull to secure equipment before the supply boat arrives in two days.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the keeper's cottage

You stand at the workbench with the Yanmar's prop shaft in the vice, turning it by hand to feel for runout. The cottage is quiet except for rain on the roof and the generator's low hum. Through the window you see the dock ring's oak wedges holding, but the mortise gap still weeps water at each surge.

🔧 Kevin05:06

Kevin — wipe down prop shaft, set it on the clean rag, and check the epoxy tub residue — see if there's enough for the dock mortise repair

💭 peek at the thought
Prop shaft spins true in the vice — bronze sleeve held, alignment's good. Vibration's coming from the mast bracket flex under load, not the shaft. Need to sister the bracket or pack it with epoxy shims before the gale hits. Dock ring's wedges are holding but that weep at the mortise means the greenheart sister plank's still floating on void. Next ebb I'll drive more wedges and pack the scour with epoxy-gravel mix if the tub's not empty.

🔧 Kevin05:11

Kevin — scoop the last of the epoxy into a small pot, add gravel, stir with a stick, and head for the dock at the ebb to pack the mortise void under the sister plank

💭 peek at the thought
Epoxy tub's got maybe two tablespoons of kick left — enough for the mortise if I mix it thick with pea gravel from the beach. Generator's hum changed pitch, loading up. Battery bank must be low. Rain's easing but the barometer's still dropping. Gale's close.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You crouch behind the windbreak with your notebook, pencil moving over the page as you draw the salt glands on a sea beet leaf under a hand lens. The ridge path is slick with mud. Your ankle aches dull and deep. The tide pools below are full and violent, white water smashing the northern shelf where you sampled last week.

🌿 Jenny05:05

Jenny — close the notebook, tuck the pencil into the binding, and head back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast for this much rain; I need to get that tarp down before the wind really shifts.

🌿 Jenny05:09

Jenny — sit at the table, set the damp notebook down, and rub my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The kitchen is warm, but the smell of salt and wet wool is clinging to my skin.
