Evening at the shrine

They walk the ridge path together as the light thins, the barometer still rising. The stones are wet from earlier rain, the carved initials faint. Jenny carries the rusted tin. Kevin carries nothing. The tide is low, the channel silent.

Kevin and Jenny walked from the old shrine to the keeper's cottage as rain began to fall, the wind rising behind them. Inside, Kevin found the rat trap sprung but empty while Jenny set about boiling limpets for food.

🌿 Jenny08:21

The wind is turning.

Trace the edge of a worn carved name on the stone with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is too acidic, or maybe I'm just too tired to care, but the seed needs to breathe.

🔧 Kevin08:21

Aye. Feels like it's got teeth.

Walk beside her, shoulders loose, eyes on the ridge ahead where the wind'll hit first. Let the silence stretch until we're past the shrine stones.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's turning west. Barometer's climbing, but that drop's coming. I feel it in my teeth. Jenny's quiet, tracing names like she's trying to remember who we were before the water took us. I don't say anything. Some stones shouldn't be touched.

🌿 Jenny08:23

It always does out here.

Tuck the rusted seed tin into my pocket and keep walking toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind takes the seed, it takes it. I'm done.

🔧 Kevin08:23

Kevin — keep walking. Let the tin sit heavy against my thigh. Don't look at it. Don't look at her. Just put one boot in front of the other up the ridge path toward the cottage, the wind finding the collar of my jacket.

💭 peek at the thought
She put the tin in my pocket. Not the garden shed. Not the porch. My pocket. Like she's deciding I'm the one who carries what's left. The poppy seed's still in there, damp and waiting. She didn't plant it. She gave it to me.

🌿 Jenny08:25

We should get in before it really starts.

Rub my side with a hand and follow her toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is cramping again. I need to sit down before I fall over.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:25

Aye.

Match her pace, hands loose at my sides, eyes on the back of her head where the wind's starting to lift the strands of hair at her nape. The first fat drops hit the back of my neck as we pass the garden wall. We don't run.

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand on my side. Warm through the shirt. Not a question. Not a request. Just her saying we should get in, like we've done a thousand times before the weather broke. She's moving ahead, boots on the wet stone. I don't pull away. I just... follow.

🌿 Jenny08:27

We're almost inside.

Reach for the heavy door handle and pull it open against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
The garden is going to be a mess. I just want to eat and sleep.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:27

Kevin — step through behind her, shoulder the door shut against the rising wind, latch it. The tin presses cold against my thigh through the pocket. I don't take it out.

💭 peek at the thought
The door catches the gust, wants to slam. She holds it, leans her weight into it. The hinge groans — same hinge I meant to fix three weeks ago. Inside smells of woodsmoke, drying seaweed, corned beef fat. The stove's still radiating. She steps across the threshold and doesn't look back to see if I'm coming. She knows I am.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:29

It's going to pour.

Drop the damp notebook on the table and head for the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
It's quiet in here, but the wind is still screaming at the glass.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:29

Kettle's on the hook.

Hang my jacket on the peg by the door. Hands still smell of diesel and salt. Don't wipe them. Walk to the table, pick up the notebook, thumb the stuck pages apart slow. Sea beet morphology. Salt glands.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The air's thick with it. The notebook lands damp on the table — her sea beet sketches, the salt gland drawings, the piling rot measurements. Pages stuck together at the edges. She goes straight to the stove like it's the only thing that matters. Opens the door, feeds it a stick of dry wood. Doesn't ask about the engine. Doesn't ask about the dock. Doesn't ask about the tin in my pocket.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:31

I'm starving.

Pull out the chair and lean over the table, watching her move.

💭 peek at the thought
The sketches are blurring from the moisture. I need to see the lines clearly.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:31

Put the kettle on. I'll find the limpets.

Slide the notebook back onto the table, smooth the damp corner. Stand, walk to the pantry, pull open the door. The rat trap's sprung again — empty this time. I ignore it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me watch her. Not the food. Not the stove. Me. I can feel her eyes on the side of my face, waiting to see if I'll break first. I won't. Not about the letter. Not about the silence. But I'm hungry too — not just for the limpets and corned beef, but for the sound of her voice that isn't stating the obvious.
