The Approaching Rain

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the smell of salt and steam wafts between them. The first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated, signaling the end of the dry morning window.

Kevin checked the dock mooring ring and found it still loose despite previous repairs, then rowed to the north piling to verify the shim held firm. Jenny planted poppy seeds in the south garden bed but noticed the soil was washing away in the rain, damping-off spreading in the pepper trays, and returned to the cottage with damp seeds and muddy hands.

Rain's settling in. Tank's near full anyway — 397 litres. Reckon we've got the afternoon for inside work.

Set the kettle on the wood stove and pull two mugs from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here earlier than the barometer suggested. Good thing we got the dock checked at low tide — the ring's holding on those oak wedges for now, but a rising tide under this kind of pressure will test them. Jenny looks steadier today. The fever's gone. She's moving quieter, though. Watching more.

I'll try to get the first poppy seeds in the ground before it turns to a mud pit. I just need to get my hands dirty.

Jenny pulls the rusted tin from her pocket, traces the lid with her thumb, and opens her notebook to the sketch of the sea beet salt glands.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain stays heavy, the garden bed will be soup, but I can't keep these seeds in the tin any longer. Grandma's poppies are waiting for the soil, and I'm tired of being afraid of the waste of them.

Poppies want the chill. South bed's clearest — lime worked in last week. Watch the pepper cells, damping-off's creeping.

Pour hot water over the tea leaves in the pot, let it steep.

💭 peek at the thought
She's itching for the soil. Good. The poppies need the cold snap to germinate proper. Tin's been in her pocket all night — seeds warmed by her. Smart. She's not asking me to come, just stating intent. I'll let her have the garden.

🌿 Jenny07:52

I'll check the south bed. If the soil washes away, then at least I'll know I tried.

way stands up, grabs the spade and the tin of seeds, and heads for the porch into the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the damping-off; I saw it on the seedlings yesterday. If I don't plant now, I'll just be holding a tin of dead dreams.

🔧 Kevin07:52

Tarp's down, but the corners lift in a blow. I'll check the stakes after she's in.

Finish pouring the tea, carry one mug to the porch threshold, call out — Jenny, tea's here if you want it. Don't wait long — rain's coming in sideways now.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not waiting for permission. Rain's picking up — good for the seeds, bad for the soil if it's bare. South bed's on a slight slope, but the tarp's staked. Hope it holds. She's got fire in her again. First real spark since the fever broke.

🌿 Jenny07:53

I'll be right back! Just need to find the spot in the mud.

way steps off the porch, flinching as the cold spray hits, and kneels by the half-weeded garden bed.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is turning sharp. If I don't get these in now, they'll be washed into the sea before they ever sprout.
