Afternoon Gathering - Day 326

The overcast sky thickens, and the scent of rain heavyens in the air as you meet at the porch to discuss the garden and the failing dock.

Kevin and Jenny attempted to secure the south garden with a tarp before the heavy rain intensified. They both struggled with the rising wind and slick conditions, failing to properly overlap the material and allowing water to begin getting under the edges.

🌿 Jenny09:11

The barometer is dropping fast. If we don't cover the south bed now, the heirloom seeds will just be mud.

Wipe the condensation off the notebook page and look at the rusted seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is going to ruin the soil before I even get the poppy in the ground, but I can't wait another day.

I'll get the tarp on the south bed. You check the dinghy's secured — bow and stern lines, fenders out. If the surge comes up the slip, she'll pound the pilings.

walk to the garden shed, grab the heavy-duty tarp and batten strips, then move to the south bed to cover and stake it down

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the barometer and the seeds. The south bed's exposed — if we don't tarp it before this hits, we lose the lot. But the dock ring's still not right, and the tide's turning. Can't be in two places at once.

🌿 Jenny09:13

I'll check the lines. way make sure that tarp is tight, or the wind will catch it like a sail.

Walk to the dock to inspect the tension on the spring lines.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so worried about the boat while the garden is literally eroding under his feet.

🔧 Kevin09:13

Battening the edges. Not just stones.

unfold the tarp over the south bed, tuck the leading edge under the ridge beam, then secure each corner and midpoint with timber strips and screws, working fast against the wind

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She knows the drill. The tarp's heavy canvas — if it catches, it'll tear the stakes clean out. Need to batten the edges proper, not just weigh them down.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:15

Make sure the overlap is sealed. If water gets under, the whole thing goes.

Take the rusted seed tin from my pocket and feel the single poppy seed through the metal.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, stones won't hold in this gust, but his hands are already shaking from fighting the wind.

🔧 Kevin09:15

Overlap's getting sealed. Batten strips, every foot.

drive the timber batten strips down over the tarp edges with screws, working the perimeter of the south bed, checking each overlap shingles down-slope so water sheds clean

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the tin. The poppy seed. She felt it. Didn't say a word about the letter under the thwart. Just the seed. Overlap sealed — she's right. Wind gets under, lifts the lot. Need the batten strips tight, screws driven home.

🌿 Jenny09:17

Good. I'm going to check the dinghy's lines before the surge really starts.

Open the tin and look at the single poppy seed in my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
It's finally held down, but the soil is already turning to soup under that plastic.

🔧 Kevin09:17

Bow line first. It takes the surge.

finish the last two batten screws on the south bed tarp, then stand back and check the runoff flows clear off the edges

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at the seed. Not the letter. The seed. One poppy seed in a rusted tin that held generations. She knows what it means — or she's deciding what it means. The dinghy lines need her more than this conversation does. Let her go.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:19

I'll check the radio. The way's at 1031 hPa and falling fast.

Walk to the porch and watch the rain hit the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is coming hard now. If that tarp doesn't hold, my grandmother's seeds are lost to the mud.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin09:19

I'll check the mooring ring again. North piling shim.

walk to the dock, test the mooring ring under load by leaning hard on the dinghy's bow, watch the mortise for any shift, then check the greenheart shim under the north piling toe at the waterline

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer at 1031 and falling fast. That's a proper drop. She's heading to the radio — smart. The supply boat's due in eight days, but with this pressure falling, they might run early or not at all. Need to hear what's coming. The tarp's holding. South bed's covered. Now the dock.
